You see...religion is BIG business so watch out for the millions of "gift" shops that'll sell you anythng from your very own halo to a cast of the footprint of 'Herself'.

Apart from the rip off merchandise - which, let's be honest would be everywhere, jumps at you from all directions it's actually a very safe place.

The wonkiest in the world

Carts of the world !

I swear that the baggage trollys / carts at Knock airport are the worst in the world.

These rusting hulks rarely seem to have even one working wheel and are so knackered that even a desperate Bangladeshi scrap metal dealer would not take them.

UPDATE : JUNE 2005. Upon arriving at the airport in June 2005, I thought things had improved when I spotted (and I swear I'm not making this up) a wheelbarrow left just outside the arrivals door from the apron. The thought of it ! a fleet of wheelbarrows for you suitcases, how useful. So, no obvious cultural stereotypes there.

UPDATE : DEC 2005. They have bought a new gleaming consignment of shiny trollys ! I'm sure that it is only a matter of time before the Irish weather gets to them and they will be looking like the old ones.

Beware of nuns who drive

As Knock is a holy pilgrimage site there are more than the usual density of nuns around these parts.

Beware, they always travel in pairs when driving and believe they have an inalienable right to talk fourteen to the dozen to each other, oblivious to the fact that they are travelling at 32 miles per hour in the outside lane of the dual carriageway by-pass with a winker on.

You have been warned - try not to swear at them too much.

Departure tax at Knock airport

This is control...you have a ladder failure.

Knock Airport have long operated a rather silly policy of leying a "Development levy" on each departing passenger. (presumbly to take a few more weeds out of the runway)

This departure tax is not part of the ticket, but is collected at the airport. It is currently 10 Euro per person.

Ryanair withdrew one of their daily flights in protest back in September 2003 - but it does not appear to have altered things.

Car parking charges have also be increased sharply
