Matt Molloy's Pub: A nice, but crowded pub

by donpaul77

I suppose no visit to Westport is complete without a pint at Matt Molloy's pub. Matt Molloy is the extraordinary flute player of the Chieftains, and this is his pub. It is a very nice place inside, and they have great traditional music most nights, but it gets PACKED with tourists. You might be better off having a pint there early and looking for a less crowded bar for music, unless of course Matt Molloy himself is there. casual

The Harp Tavern: Real Irish Music

by Goner

We lucked out, on Monday nights across the street from the Sligo City Hotel, where we happened to be staying, The Harp Tavern has authentic Irish music. It's a lovely pub and dancers came in for a round of Irish dancing, not the Riverdance style, more a square dance with partners, intricate and lively - we loved every minute of it.They have Jazz on Sunday nights. Check out website below. Everyone was dressed casually - mostly jeans.

Traditional Irish Pub

by nylo

Day before St Pats Day, we'd come out of the Guinness Warehouse, down the main road towards the city centre. We needed to stop for the loo, so we went into this little pub (i wish i could remember its name!) and we ended up having 2 pints here! There were the locals sat in the corner playing Irish songs, a group of them with their wives, it was a wonderful atmosphere! We chatted to another bloke at the bar. After that we decided this would be where we come after the Parade on St Pats Day. We didnt want to go to the Americanised pubs or Temple Bar that you can go to anywhere in the world. We wanted a traditional irish pub whilst in Ireland, and this is exactly what it was! Brilliant! casual

The Ship Inn: Irish Music on a Monday night in Sligo!

by nylo

There were 2 pubs next to eachother. I think one was called The Harp, other was The Ship Inn. Im pretty sure it was the 2nd that had the live music. It was a trio and they did the classic Irish songs and a couple of other blokes did solos They were a good bunch! There was a big crowd of people that turned up i thought too, esspecially with it being a Monday night. If your in Sligo on a monday night definaletly drop by. Casual or dressy if you like ;)

King's Head Pub: King's Head Pub

by molough

We had a splendid time at King's Head Pub! We went here two nights. The first night it was a bit early so it wasn't all that busy. We had a pleasant pint and headed out. But the second night we went there, it was completely packed. There was a really great band playing. I wish I could remember the name. But the atmosphere was great. Lots of merriment and music. I think they have live music most nights so if you like live music and a great crowd, head to King's Head. whatever you want

Tip Photo
Roisin Dubh: Roisin Dubh

by molough

We were here late at night. I was expecting a typical pub but I would definitely classify Roisin Dubh as a club. There was dancing everywhere and a ton of alcohol consumption. Not sure if there is dancing in the earlier hours. But either way, we had a blast. Some bartenders from Tigh Coili took us here and showed us a really great time. If you want to dance and it's late at night (like 3 AM), go to Roisin Dubh. Whatever you want

Tip Photo
Galway: Tigh Coili

by molough

Tigh Coili is my favorite pub in Galway! The people and atmosphere at Tigh Coili are delightfully refreshing. We made fast freinds with the bartenders who showed us around Galway the following night. (Say hi from Chicago Morgan to Dave the bartender if you go here!) Everyone is very friendly and inviting. There was traditional Irish music playing the first night we went there. A group of about 12 musicians. It was the best place I'd been yet to hear Irish music. It's right in the heart of Galway, too. Right along the pedestrian streets. You can't miss it. Whatever you want. Casual or cute. It all works.

The Temple Bar and The Auld Dubliner: Temple Bar

by molough

If you're in your 20s or 30s and looking for a fun area to go drinking, hit up Temple Bar. We actually stayed in this hood when we were there the first time. You meet a TON of people and everyone is there for the same reason ... to drink and have fun! The Temple Bar and The Auld Dubliner are great fun. The Temple Bar is A LOT bigger than it looks from the outside. Auld Dubliner had great live music. A lot of pubs don't let under 23s in ... which is great, because it weeds out the sometimes irritating younger crew. Less riff raff in the pubs is good. Casual. You can dress up cute in a skirt or dress or wear jeans and a T. Anything works.

Pubs: Publife

by Pieter11

A very important part of the Irish life are the thousends of pubs that you can find anywhere in the country. For the Irish, a pub is more than just a place to drink beer at night. A pub is a place where everybody meets eachother. And everybody is everybody in the pub: from children to the grandparents.A typically Irish pub looks a bit like a livingroom: quite often with a fireplace in the middle, with comfortable seats, set up in different, small groups, and with all kinds of things hung up on the walls and the ceiling: pictures, paintings, instruments, mirrors and whatever can be hung up.Most of the pubs are open in the afternoon already, when you can get in to have a tea or a coffee, but don't be surprised if you find people drinking a pint of Guinness already at this hour. And in the evening everybody comes in to have even more pints and to enjoy the live music that is often played in...
