I can truly say there is nothing better in Ireland than the nightlife in a local Pub, no matter how small or remote it is.Go to my Albums on my Ireland page, and see the Pubs I have visited. So friendly, so relaxing, so fun, so warm....if you are tired, be sure to go....you will be refreshed with the Irish Wit and Charm. It is more than the "drink"....it is the life and music of the people. Casual

Mat Molloy's Pub in Westport: If Chieftains, then Westport, Co.Mayo!!

by Helena1962

This could be one of the most visited and more photographed pubs in Ireland... at least in northwestern Ireland! This pub belongs to Mat Molloy's who is one of the musicians of the group "The Chieftains". This Pub displays live music for free, but if the performers are well-known, they may want a fee.Just go and enjoy!!!

Matt Molloy's, Westport, Co. Mayo: Irish Music

by CCW

This is Westport's best-known night spot, so it's often crowded with tourists, many of whom seem to think that being in a pub is an excuse to be loud and obnoxious. It's the MUSIC, idiots! Molloy is 1/7 of the Chieftains and knows everybody who's anybody in Irish music, so even if he's not in residence (as he often isn't), the quality of the music is always good and sometimes astounding. I went there twice: the first time, some OK-but-undistinguished local musicians competed for our attention with a group of Guinness-sodden European yahoos; but the second time, a flute/fiddle duo appeared who were evidently great local favorites (I never got their names), and they blew everyone away: I stayed till the pub closed, and a little after, and finally floated back to my B&B on the memory of the music! I hear that there's sometimes a cover charge for 'name' bands, but in general there's no...

The three pubs of Doolin, co Clare: It goes on and on and on....

by sourbugger

Nightlife is what Doolin in County Clare became famous for. I first struck on this village by accident many years ago. In those days the pubs openly flouted the drinking laws. I remember standing in one of the pubs at 4 O’clock in the morning, when the Barman refused to serve me as it was “well after hours”. He did add however that he could do an off-Licence sale. I enquired further if you could thus exit the pub, and re-enter to consume my purchases. This seemed quite in order to him.All three of Doolin’s pubs plan regular Irish music nights, usually every night. Even if nothing is planned musicians will often just strike up unannounced and play or jam together. It’s not exactly a hardship in an evening to visit all three of the pubs and get a feel for what’s going on.

The Old Oak: Continuing the pub crawl

Titanic Queenstown complex - Cobh: Avoid the bloody big ice cubes

by sourbugger

Many thousands of punts (or Euros now) has been spent on transforming the old departure point of the White Star line into a bar and a couple of restaurants. The historical connections, as the last port of call of the ill-fated Titanic cannot be denied and it's setting on the watersedge is terrific. We did not see the two restaurants, but the main bar itself was, if anything, a little uninspiring. Food and drink was also a tad overpriced and distinctly average. It was only later when their website was being viewed that we appreciated the amount of effort that had been expended making elements of the bar relevant to the TItanic ship. For example, the ceiling is supposed to replicate the ceiling of the 1st class smoking rooms (how appropriated when it is now banned from bars in Ireland !) on the Titanic. There are also a number of relevant arefacts and records concerning the ship and its...

O'Conners Muskery Arms: Great Pub

by Coombsie

We were in Blarney on the eve of my birthday and we stumbled across this pub. We had been walking for a bit out in the cold so we went in and I had an Irish Coffee. Let me just say, they don't make them like that in the US! The bartender was excellent. My man got to play darts which he had been dying to do since we had arrived into the country. We met some locals that were in the pub that night to watch a soccer game. The people at the pub that night were very passionate about there soccer teams! It was just an excellent evening, and we met some great people! Very casual.

it can happen anywhere: great pub sessions

by piglet44

Try to go to a small village pub somewhere off the tourist trail and sooner or later you will hit a great music session. Musicians will come in and just begin playing and others will join in ,and the guinness will flow. The Irish people are very friendly and will just start talking to you. It is a great experience. They are just so spontaneous about the music and the atmosphere is brilliant. This happened to us in the Tigh Hughes pub in Spiddal and in Kilkenny the Pumphouse and also in a pub in Ennis, I don't remember the name of....anyway it is fun fun fun
