All nightlife spots: No smoking, please

by AR76

Since the end of March, 2004, a smoking ban has been introduced for all public areas in the country. This includes all night clubs, pubs, theatres, restaurants etc.Ash trays are provided outside many pub/club entrances and the black public trash cans are fitted with ash trays as well.Anyone disobeying this law can await a huge fine.

Dublin's posh places!

by tvdm

Dublin nowadays has more posh and pretentious places than you could possibly shake a stick at. They're quite often the main focus of local mockery and as such are not favoured among the 'aulder' generation. Young urban hipsters, however, are taking to these places like fish to water. The pic features Cocoon, one of the cool loungy hangouts. You can find this and much more at the following sites:www.worldsbestbars.comwww.beerintheevening.comEspecially short-time visitors might be more inclined to look for the old-fashioned pubs to get a bit of a taste for the auld Irish atmosphere. In that case Toner's in Baggot Street and The Long Hall in George Street would be your best bets. Then again, why not spoil yourself and indulge in a little trend-setting? In any case, Dublin has plenty of bars to satisfy any serious drinker's needs! Dress up and make an effort: everyone else does it!

Enjoy and be merry: Craic

by morgandk

The Gaels are used to tourists- and they will even put on the best craic (Krack for rednecks means fun) for you. If you don't like the black pints then they either have uisce (whiskey - water of life) or you can stick to a girly drink like Irish cream.

Kerry..o conners bar: dance around the clock

the band starts about 6 pm every sunday. they play everything from rock ,jazz to blues. it is very loud, but you can dance away . its just something different in a town where you hear traditional music everywhere. whatever you fancy

The Grand, Killarney: A GOOD CRAIC

by hevbell

There is usually a traditional Irish band playing from 9-11pm and then another live band start up near the back of the pub til about 1am. The night we went there was a really good rock band, Bluemoose, (http://www.bluemoose.ie) playing and we all had a really good night. There is also a dancefloor area through the back that opens up later in the night. Anything goes from what I could tell

The Quay: Find Local Music

by AKtravelers

In Galway, don't miss a chance to enjoy a pint or two and take in the local music scene. The place we went on both nights we were there was the Quay. This place has a small front room tapping Guinness and Murphy's that ends in a dorrway by the corner. Walk through there and the place opens up! Now you're in a cathedral like auditorium, with a band playing on a small stage above a long bar. You'll find people from all over the world drinking pints and moving to the sounds of traditional Irish music or local rock. Have fun! No special dress

various: Tommy Tiernan - stand up comedy

by sourbugger

Tommy has been doing the rounds recently. I caught him at the Galway Arts festival in July 2003. Reviews of his shows are somewhat mixed, but if you like comedy in the tradition of Billy Connely then you will probably be laughing away like a good 'unI liked the fact that much of his comedy was connected to Ireland and his life there.I especially liked his comparison of the Irish attitude to life with Buddhist philosophy. Buddhism teaches that we have to accept the pain and suffering of life which we know will end in death. Only then can we reach true happiness in this life.In the same way he argues if an Irishman is invited to a party, then you just know it's going to be sh*te, so you accept it's sh*te, but then sure, you can have some craic. Tommy makes no effort - why should you ?What a scruffy bugger

Everywhere: Experience the Irish Pub Life

by Vintom

The Black Stuff: GUINNESSAt the end of the day, or any time of the day for that matter you can have a nice couple of pints to look forward to. You must have a pint of Guinness when in Ireland, otherwise your trip will not be complete. Certain pubs will have a dress code, especially in the bigger cities where you may find doormen. As a tourist at least I don't think you will have any trouble.

In the parks there often are...

by shivan

In the parks there are often concerts of classical, "country/irish" or centic music. Those are for free, just sit and enjoy the music.I feel this should be a "must do activity", maybe I'll move this tip, because the real Irish atmosphere comes also from these occasions, don't miss them.

Action at the Pub

by Goner

The pubs are where the fun is in the evenings. Their warm and inviting with local food and drink. Ask at your hotel or B&B for the best pub in town for Irish music, the locals alway know where to go. The pubs are always casual - no need to dress up.
