The Trinity Arms: Busy local bar

by orlikins

Trinity Arms was crowded when we went in, even though it was only like 6pm. Handy after a day of shopping & sightseeing. It's got a large screen, so it would be a good place to see a match on Sky Sports or sthg. Casual. Well they did let me in, so it cant be that "posh"

O'Donoghue's: A Dublin Institution

by TRimer

Now this is an old Irish pub. Small and narrow, O'Donoghue's is famous the world over. Popular with both tourists and locals, this could be called a typical Irish pub. A spit-on-the-floor type place. This is the pub where the Dubliners folk group first started many years ago. And you'll still get the odd musical session going on. They've recently added a back bar which is nice and pleasant and totally different from the main bar. Nearly always busy. If it's not tourists, it's the office crowd. Fills up very quickly and don't expect to be sitting down. A bit of music from a session in the corner should be available.

Zanzibar: Dublin Night Club

by TRimer

Opened in the summer 1998 and is supposed to have cost over a million Irish pounds to build. And it shows. The theme is African/Middle Eastern and thankfully there's not too much wood. Lots of marble effect, big paintings and drapes. A huge place with a very high ceiling, it can hold around 1,500 people. A most impressive pub. People here dress to impress. Lots of pretty 20 year olds. You will need to look nice to get past the bouncers.

The Quays: Beautiful and Fun Bar in Galway

by TRimer

The Quays Bar, or Teach na Ceibhe as it's known in Irish, has an international reputation for the best in music and atmosphere. It is vibrant, cosmopolitan and full of curiosities. But many will be surprised to learn that it was always so. The 19th century building that is now the Quays originally comprised a two-storey house with two doors, one window and an outside toilet. Located in what was once known as Water Gate Street , the pub stands in the heart of Galway's Latin Quarter, surrounded by medieval buildings and cobbled streets. The pub, originally named Lydon's, was particularly popular with the fishermen of Galway. This newly renovated pub has kept the charm which gained it an international reputation for its traditional Irish music sessions. The interior has a 'church' theme which is immaculately executed in wood and glass, right down to the pews. It's worth a visiting just to...

several addresses: Dublin, co Dublin: clubs, pubs, live music

by call_me_rhia

Here's a list of some places I used to like, and which are still open as far as I know. They are all in the city centre, in the southside, unless otherwise stated. Let's start with one address for clubs: Fibber Magee's in Parnell St (Northside) for alternative music. I tried many other places, but obviously they were a bit too posh. Dublin means music and it's really sad not to enjoy some locals bands while there, so here's a list of live music venues: The Baggot Inn in Baggot Street, and Whelans at 25 Wexford Street usually have rock bands playing. The Mean Fiddler in Wexford St, Mother Redcaps Tavern in Back Lane (Christchurch)and Slattery's at 129 Capel Street (northside) have either folk rock or traditional musicians playing.Pubwise, there's one for every taste: none of the following attract a fashionable crowd, so skip them if you are interested in the show-off scene: Brogan's in...

A MUST for any traditional...

by kathycollins

A MUST for any traditional Irish music fan is a sesion in a pub. And the very best sesion is usually at HudiBeg in Bunbeg, County Donegal on monday nights. This was a fantastic experience! There were more than 18 musicians there, all playing together or taking turns featuring something someone wanted to share. I'll never forget this evening. It was every dream come true for seeing the country with the eyes and soul of its own people. This is not a tourist gig but the real thing. Irishmen sharing a pint and a song.see my travelogue SeisuinsA dCeilis

by polecat

This trip I did not visit many large cities. I spent most of my time in small villages and towns. You must visit the pubs even if you don't drink. This is where much of the local culture goes on. There is music, danceing and good time for all. I have been to the tourest places in Dublin and they pale compared to the places in the country side.

Trad Music: Teach Hudai Beag (Gallagher's Bar)

by Anisha1

If you're looking for Traditional music on a Monday night then Hudí Beags in Bunbeg is the place. This is the best session in the county, with sometimes up to 15 or more players. The best talent in the area play here Summer & Winter..not to be missed!!Leo's Bar has just re opened. It's worth a visit and I hear the food is good too.

Didn't go in that many places....

by kukkuti

Didn't go in that many places. Clifden is familiar of course. Most of the local young people go to Mullarkey's or Guys and all the tourists to E.J.Kings (live 'irish' music every night). And the 'night club' Clifden House is..err.. well, 'experience'!Galway is the best place to party if you're looking for bigger music scene. In Ireland, in general, I found the most interesting pubs in very small villages 'in the middle of nowhere'. There was still a bit of left that real old irish culture, old men having their Guinness's and no tourists.
