Expect for the rain

by afra

When someone from sunny Spain gets on the move towards Ireland for a fresh summer season, (s)he should expect for some rain. Well, the truth is you're not gonna get some rain, you're gonna get all the rain you can bear and some more. Really. Forget about planning the trip according to the weather 'cause the weather, I'm telling you, is gonna be like that all the time. Seriously. Just choose on what spot you wanna be showered.

Southern Ireland is subtropical

by gardenglenn

Travelling in Southern Ireland I was suprised to see palm trees, YES, palm trees. The southernmost parts of Ireland can get in the 80's. No one has air conditioning so you may have to ask for a fan in your room. We were there in late June. Don't bring a lot of shorts but pack at least one pair if going in the summer to southern Ireland. The beaches are beautiful in Wexford but the water is very cold.

What to bring to Ireland.

by pisceshoneybee

Pack light, you wont need alot of dressy clothes. There is no where to wear them. Think warm and comfortable. Maybe 1 dress for special occasion or night out. Unless you stay in a big city like Dublin - there are only small pubs. No night clubs in small towns. Think comfortable. They do not wear high heels around Ireland and the roads and side walks are very uneven. BRING TOWELS! If they have towels (self catering cottages do not) they will be small. So bring one of your own to be safe. Digital is my choice. SPICES!!!!!!!!!!! They do not use spices, nor sell spices in Ireland. They have very bland food and again if you are in a self catering cottage as we were, there are absolutely no spices. Also, I would've killed for a non stick frying pan, with all the cooking anc cleaning I did with 4 kids. Also there is a "mapquest" type of site for Europe that I found VERY helpful to guide us...

Don't forget a plug converter!!!

by Helena1962

Don't forget a plug converter: In some houses you may need an european-like plug, and some others only english-american. So do not forget it, otherwise you may have problems to use your electrical items.

Wind stopper higly recomended

by illudiumqh36

Remember to pack a wind stop jacket... on the west coast I was almost flying away as a kite!!!If you want to stand admiring the sea in a stormy day (and you do must do this!!!) you cannot miss this kind of clothe.

Stuff to take to Ireland

by travelmoon

Bring a lightweight rain jacket, one you can tie around your waist. Don't worry about looking like a tourist...you will look like a tourist anyway...plus the jacket can provide extra pockets for stuff. In addition to your usual camera, bring a couple of paper cameras so you can ask strangers to take your picture. Paper cameras are easy to use so a language barrier won't be a problem, and you don't have to worry about the camera being taken.

Packing List

by oma14

I take two 26" rolling duffle bags...one has my clothes in it, the other is empty to bring back those wonderful bargains I find. For my carry on I use a backpack with meds, makeup, tolietries, camera, film, etc. Pack light....They have laundromats if you are opposed to wearing your clothes more than once but due to the great weather it is perfectly easy to rewear anything a time or twoand be comfortable doing so...Take clothing that can be worn in layers and don't forget your unbrella, raincoat/poncho, and an extra pair of shoes in case you get yours wet and it takes a day for them to dry out....you may need rain gear and you may not but the odds are that you will and it you aren't prepared it could cause you to waste a lot of in your room days and Ireland is far to lovely to waste even an hour due to the rain.... Make sure you take enough of any prescription meds that you are required...

Be prepared for the weather

by sourbugger

Waterproof ones To suggest wellies would be a rather obvious ethnic sterotype, so I won't do it. (oops) towels (Dry and fluffy) waterproof cameras waterproof tentsBeach - are you serious ? An umbrella - it rained everyday I was in Ireland in July / Aug 2003. Often without a break between the days. One Hotel we stayed in had a very nice beer garden - or was it a swimming pool. ?I read a discussion Forum a few month back on VT about the weather in the west of Ireland. One person, perhaps only half jokeingly suggested that due to the high incidence of showers in Ireland followed by sunshine the ideal solution was to go prepared - apply suncrean to your brolly !

Packing List

If you're planning to take public transportation, restrain yourself to ONE bag that's compact and easy to carry. Luggage racks in buses are narrow and sometimes slippery, so if you don't want your bag falling on your head, bring something small and keep it under your seat.(A tip: I bought a lot of books and other heavy items, so halfway through my trip I bought a cheap duffel bag, loaded all the stuff I didn't need daily into that, and consigned it to the Left Luggage at the nearest railway station. Perfectly safe, cheap -- a couple of euros a day -- and easy on the back. Another trick I learned years ago, when I was a student with a backpack and a rail pass: mail your books home. Book-rate postage is generally cheap, and, although it can take weeks for your parcel to arrive, I've NEVER lost a packet of books in the mail.) Closed, waterproof shoes are a must. Sandals are a waste unless...

rain! rain! rain!

no matter what is the season you can never be safe from rain. pack a waterproof jacket and shoes so that you won't miss out on anything cos of bad weather landscapes are great and you deffenitly want to take a picture to look at it when you get home. it would be handy if you have a waterproof camera.
