A village that is famous-and rightfully so-for some of the best traditional music in Ireland. Traditional music has become popular all over the island in recent years, but Doolin continues to be a standout. All three pubs (McDermott's, McGann's and O'Connor's) in this tiny hamlet host “sessions” where first-rate musicians stake out a corner of the room and treat the packed house to several hours worth of reels, jigs and ballads.
Doolin Village was given it's name by the Townland of Doolin which lies half way between Fisherstreet and Roadford. The name Doolin comes from "Dubh Linn" or black lake, which is also by coincidence the old Irish name for Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. This was once the location of Doolin House, residence of the poet Francis MacNamara, the landlord of this area in those days.
In addition to music, Doolin is a famous surfing area with the main surfing carried out at the back of Crab Island. Due to the clear waters on the West Coast Doolin and its surroundings are very good areas for fishing and angling.
Rumour has it that it was in Doolin that J.R.R. Tolkien got his inspiration for
