Doolin is one of the places most tourists are heading to and mostly it is for the famous music-pub of Gus O'Connor, that made this tiny village at the west-coast of Ireland world-famous.
Gus O'Connor's Pub is dating back to the year 1832 and live-performances of traditional music will take place every night in the summer-season. the sessions start at 09.30p.m. and last untill late at night.
Gus O'Connor's Pub is also well known for great food : the kitchen is open between noon and 09.00p.m.
Doolin is also a great place to shop for music-casettes in that building that you may see on my picture - it is the first house after the bridge !
From Doolin you can also take a ferry to the Aran Island and there is a large and quite good camping-site as well !

If going to experience the cliffs of mohor in ireland, dont just go to the visitor center with all the package tours. I suggest either hiking from doolin to the visitor center or the other way around. Ask in town for directions to the beginning of the hike. Aille river hostel gave me directions. The hike takes about 2 1/2 hours and is absolutely amazing. Bring good shoes and be careful not to fall of the cliffs, that would put a damper on your holiday. Seriously though, the hike goes right along the cliffs and is mostly unmarked, be careful!!

A village that is famous-and rightfully so-for some of the best traditional music in Ireland. Traditional music has become popular all over the island in recent years, but Doolin continues to be a standout. All three pubs (McDermott's, McGann's and O'Connor's) in this tiny hamlet host “sessions” where first-rate musicians stake out a corner of the room and treat the packed house to several hours worth of reels, jigs and ballads.
Doolin Village was given it's name by the Townland of Doolin which lies half way between Fisherstreet and Roadford. The name Doolin comes from "Dubh Linn" or black lake, which is also by coincidence the old Irish name for Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. This was once the location of Doolin House, residence of the poet Francis MacNamara, the landlord of this area in those days.
In addition to music, Doolin is a famous surfing area with the main surfing carried out at the back of Crab Island. Due to the clear waters on the West Coast Doolin and its surroundings are very good areas for fishing and angling.
Rumour has it that it was in Doolin that J.R.R. Tolkien got his inspiration for
'The Lord Of The Rings'.

When driving around in the west of Ireland, allow yourself to take a break and enjoy the beautiful landscape or the typical Irish villages. Some of the things you'll see seem so plain and simple, but keep in mind that they are so typically Irish and special. Make sure to take some photos because you will not find them anywhere else. I really liked the Burren, an area with a lot of forgotten churches, stone walls and desolate cemeteries.

OK, Doolin is quite touristy now but it is still a must. Especially O'Connors - although there are more Americans in this joint then Irish.
