  • Manx Cat - Isle of Man
    Manx Cat
    by KristaB
Famous Manx cat - they even sell plushy toys and figurines of this specific breed.
I saw one with beautiful pattern of black and grey (Goudrum, the lazy prince at the Cattle Rushen) and this black beauty with white socks, and the gray one and more.

Of course, local folklore offers many interesting Tailless Tales.
One says that Noah closed the door too soon, so this cat's tail got cut off.
Other tales suggest that these cats were rescued from a shipwreck. But one claims it was Spanish Armada in 17th century, the other insists it was a Baltic ship and 19th century.
Some heard from Manx cats that they were cutting of their kitten's tails themselves so Vikings couldn't decorate their helmets, and through centuries tail circumcision became part of their culture.

It is a genetic mutation that occurred hundreds of years ago. Could be something similar to Spina Bifida, because their spinal vertebra ends with a hollow one, and the base of non-existent tail looks like a small dimple. In fact, this happens all over the world, but only the Manx cats are bred with intention to have no tails. This sometimes results not only in genetic defects (inbreeding) but some people are cutting off tails from kittens so they can sell them as authentic Manx cats.

Douglas is the larges town on the IOM, center of it's economy and major port.

The Victorian style promenade is charming, most houses are refurbished into hotels, some really lovely, and some looking grim and crumbling. Many facades are being renovated, but still keeping up with the strict code of preserving Victorian style.

This modern building is probably a bank.
I like the way it has been designed to blend with Victorian buildings.
Old and new trying to coexist together.
Victorian street clock and Smart car.

The main tourist information is located in the sea terminal, when you arrive by ferry you cannot miss it. There you can get the complete timetable for the island's public transport system and lots of other information material, including some leaflets with Manx vocabulary. I took some, but was glad I didn't have to use them, everybody speaks English.
There are a few computers in the information centre with internet access, but it's not for general use, only for additional information about the Isle of Man.

    Internet Café

  • If you need internet access, there is an internet café close to the Bank of Scotland, across the street from the sea terminal. 20 minutes were £ 1. I don't usually use internet cafés so I don't know if this was expensive, but it didn't seem to be very cheap to me.
After checking my emails, I had some minutes left and like a good VTer, wanted to check on my notices there. Most probably it was my lack of computer knowledge, but I wasn't able to open the notice console. It was blocked by a pop-up blocker and none of the usual " allow temporarily" or "allow from this site" worked, so I gave up.

    A little known Island

  • The Isle of Man though a very small island has a wide range of contrasts. You can be in the town or country or a beautiful glen in moments, You can get around by a Victoran Steam railway or electric tram. Douglas is the capital and sports a horse drawn tram on the promenade. You can visit anceint castles or Laxy wheel the worlds biggest waterr wheel. Or if you want more excitement watch the TT which are held on the first week of June each year. races when motorebikes gather from all over the world for the mountain circut. This the most dangerous road race in the world. The Manx Grand Prix is held on the same circut this is smaller scale than TTand held at the end of August and first week of September. There are also a few car rallies and a big go cart race around the historic Peel. There really is something for every one. There is also a very ornate thearter really worth seeing. You can hear a wide range of live music

I live here but when I leave I realize how safe the island is and how much cleaner it is than many places and do not have any not have any motorways to get stuck in ques. It is so eay to get around and every one is friendly and helpful
