Nature reserve Punta Aderci - Abruzzo

by juna71

On the way from Vasto we noticed few signs to Punta Aderci and finally in October 2011 and after a recommendation of my friend from Lanciano (www.abruzzotour.it - great site for lot of accommodation choices in Abruzzo!) we decided to visit. It is situated just a short drive away from old coastline road SS16 between Vasto and Fossacesia, near the Vasto port. There is good car park for the Reserve but unfortunately the Tourist Centre was closed in October. During a short walk along the good solid road you can admire beautiful countryside before finally arriving in Punta's cliff with fantastic uninterrupted views towards Port of Vasto and Fossacesia. If you feel fit (because you have to continue on a footpath along the coast) you can walk for miles and we saw few people on bikes as well, so it must be popular. What we liked about the place is that although we like places organized and...

Spectacular Cavallone caves in "mamma" Majella

by juna71

We visited Grotte del Cavallone in August 2011.We struggled a bit finding it as it is about 30 min drive away down the hilly road from Casoli (Abruzzo). If you have time, stop in Casoli itself, it is charming town and also on the shore of beautiful lake. Also The museum of Majella national park is worth a visit.Upon arrival you will find a nice rural tourist and ticket office, small cafe and amenities. Then you take spectacular cable cart ride to the top of the mountain to the cave (priced at e15 for excursion and return ticket). Pay attention to rich alpine flora and wildlife on the way up, it is really gorgeous! Please note that I would not recommend this place for less able people as climb to the caves is steep.Unfortunately, the guide is only in Italian, but they provide you with information sheet in English. The cave is about 1km long, well lit, but naturally bit wet and slippery so...

The Commonwealth Cemetery

by call_me_rhia

The Commonwealth Cemetery is a wonderful cemetery on top of a hill overlooking Torino di Sangro. It's possible to drive there , or else you can take a lovely walk through the wood and reach it on foot (ask for the cimitero inglese). It's a cemetery dedicated to all the Commonwealth soldiers who died in this part of Italy during WWII: they were about 2500 and came from the UK, Canada, South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand. The starting point, both by car or on foot, is the small town of Torino di Sangro. You can catch a train there from Lanciano, or come by car. In this case take the A14 exit at Lanciano, then road 524 towards Fossacesia, road 16 "Adriatica" for 4 km southward to Vasto, after the bridge on the Sangro river there's a turning to Torino di Sangro
