Santo Stefano di Sessanio Things to Do

    The village

by shavy Written May 8, 2015

Approaching to the village the main thing we saw is the tower. Looking at it looks like the village stands on a rock surrounded by wall. Thanks to the innovative development of the territory, today Santo Stefano di Sessanio is an example of sustainable tourism both domestically and internationally, and has become one of the most sought after destinations for elite tourism

The earthquake that devastated L'Aquila and Abruzzo in 2009 has unfortunately caused extensive damage to the village, causing the collapse of the monument - symbol of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, the Medici tower, currently under reconstruction

Wandering is the easy way to find them

We visited the village on a Sunday afternoon, arrive at the parking we saw there were plenty of cars. I thought is going to be busy, indeed!. The village has accommodations available, so this can be a bit touristy most of the time. You can't expect to be alone, comparing to other villages we've to is like a ghost town we didn't saw anybody. Santo Stefano di Sessanio is one of the busiest village we've seen

The village is not big and is nice to walk around, I have been pay attention to any details of the building. There is some spot that nice for photograph, and from here the view to the lowlands are awesome

But we found some spot without intemidated by other visitors. We also found the village so pretty, there are some views in and around the building which was worth a picture. The arches are one of the most viewable here. Arches are made for passage, watch your head!

    More than I expected

I have done some research before this trip, visiting small villages are one of my main purpose. Italy has cute villages and they are findable everywhere. Abruzzo region is on the mountains and is a non-touristy destination in Italy, and many of the villages are on the hilly location

I observed that most tourists here are local italians. Although we visited a lot of small villages and Santo Stefano di Sessanio is one of them, well, I was impressed!. This one of the most beautiful village we've been to. The streets completely paved, are for the exclusive use of pedestrians who thanks to the absence of traffic are easily abducted by tranquility.

Compared to that of other medieval centers in Italy, the commercial life of Santo Stefano di Sessanio is more relaxed and quiet, there are a couple of bars, a grocery store, several workshops and a few specialty shops scattered. There are accommodations available to suit all needs.
