scanno.

by cachaseiro

scanno is another very pretty village in the mountains of abruzzo.there are more tourists here than in pacentro, but that also means better accomodation options and more restaurants.the village has winding narrow streets with clothes lines hanging from house to house.it's as small town italian as it gets.

Pacentro

by cachaseiro

pacentro is a very pretty and idyllic village set in central abruzzo up on a mountain.it has suprisingly few tourists compared to most of the other sceninc villages in abruzzo.quite a suprise when you consider that the family of the american singer "madonna" came from that little village.of the villages i saw in abruzzo, pacentro comes out as the prettiest in my opinion.

Campo Imperatore

by juzz

Campo Imperatore is Mt. Gran Sasso plateau, we travelled along it by car. It's very large and it's impressive to drive under the rocky peaks of the Gran Sasso. We reached (by car) the mountain dew called "Duca degli Abruzzi", where Mussolini was kept as prisoner before Germans set him free during Second World War (2338 m). You can have many hikes around if you want, have a look: http://it.geocities.com/abruzzomount/RifDuca.htm (it's in italian at the moment, but there's a map). After that we went to Santo Stefano di Sessanio (look my vt-page about it), a amazing rocky village just few kilometers far.

Rocca San Giovanni

by call_me_rhia

Rocca San Giovanni is a really tiny village (pop about 2700)surrounded by remains of some ancient fortified walls. The name means rock of Saint John. Rock because it's perched on top of a cliff and Saint John (Giovanni) because the village used to belong to the Abbey o San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia. There's not many points of interest, but it's a charming laid back place. When you reach the main square (which looks dangerously like a parking lot) take a look at the splendid church and bell-tower

Lanciano

by call_me_rhia

Lanciano is an ancient town a few kilometres from the sea: it's quite large and it's the commercial hub of the area. What's spectacular about it is its rich art and architecture. It's also an important religious destination in italy, because one of the churches hosts the famous Eucharistic Miracle. In another church - or better right under it - there are secret passages to be visited, and an old roman bridge that is usually hidden if you stay outdoors. There's also a beautiful town hall with a 17th century bell-tower. In other words: there is a lot (and more) to see in Lanciano... something to suit everyone's taste

Atessa

by call_me_rhia

Atessa is a panoramic old town in Abruzzo. it's located on top of two hills, so visiting it it's an up and down affair.. a pleasant one. The name Atessa, according to a legend, comes from two villages: Ate and Tixe, that used to be separated by a canyon. In this canyon, of course, lived a terrible dragon - but one day Saint leucio arrived and slyed the dragon: the two villages were magically united and Saint Leucio was then given a church. This church is a must see, as well as the one dedicated to Daint DOmenico. Another sight is the town's arch and Casa de Marco, for its old windows.

Fossacesia

by call_me_rhia

Fossacesia is located in Southeastern Abruzzo and it's made up of two distinct towns: Fossacesia Paese, high on a hilltop left of the Sangro river, and Fossacesia Marina, on the sea: in the old times Fossacesia was called Fossa Coeca (" the blind ditch"). I spent my time in Fossacesia Marina, in a friend's flat. Althought the settlement is very old, nothing is left to bear witness to it - Fossacesia Marina is a low-key seaside town frequented more by locals (meaning people from Abruzzo) than by tourists. The sea's nice and clear, and the town's main beach is a pebble beach. However, if you are prepared to walk for a few kilometres, there's a delightful sandy beach - very uncrowded - and with really calm waters... basically it's a huge natural swimming pool
