    Statuary

The new museum contains objects from prehistory to the last Roman community. The original Metapontion existed from 8-3C BC, at which time, having allied itself to Hannibal, he evacuated the whole city to avoid Roman revenge. They destroyed it anyway. Later Roman reoccupation was destroyed by Spartacus in his revolt. Across from the Museo are the ruins and up the road west(S106) is the Temple of Hera (pictured in our introduction). The museum does not allow photography and has no catalog as yet. I sneaked one picture inside but have no notes as to what it is.

    Piece of a Temple

The ruins of Metapontion are adjacent to the newly buit museum. There are landscape grass and ancient stone walkway and drains that have been replaced in their proper place (also diagrams and signs). The foundations of the temples are laid out, but of course nthing is vertical. To help ome visualize some larger pieces (architectural elements) have been elevated a few feet on fragments of pillars and other supports. To me this appears modernist and rather futile. At the edge of the "city" one can see the outer wall of the theater (much restored ). Given my advanced age , a drizzly atmosphere, a longish walk, and the exhibit I stood in, I decided not to go there. 2km NW by S 106 is the Temple of Hera which you should not miss if you have come here.
