Bressanone Things to Do

  • Don't miss the bishops' palace!

Palazzo Vescovile was the palace where the princes bishops lived from 1250. It was home of the bishops until 1964.The construction of this building begun in 960. It was enlarged and restored various times; especially in the 1700.This palace has three stories built around a very large courtyard. It houses around 70 rooms. Here you can see the...

It really is a pleasure to walk through the small alleys of Bressanone. Just take a look at the pics!

  • Domplatz, dom, and sk. Michael kirche

The dom ( cathedral ) dominates old town Bressanone, but the spire of the older kirche ( church ) of sk. Michael is also visible from a great distance. Construction of sk. Michael kirche began about 1100 years ago. In stark contrast to the dom, the architecture of sk. Michael is strictly Romanesque and early Gothic. The multi toned tile roof is the...

  • History Part Two

You can find lots of old mural paintings in Bressanone/Brixen. Some very interesting ones in the arcades next to the cathedral, but also many on houses in the town. The earliest paintings are from the 14th century. Most of them have religious themes. Mx favourite one is the painting of a horse with an elephant's trunk.I don't know if the people in...

  • History, Part One

Bressanone/Brixen is the oldest town in the area,South Tirol, and it used to be Bishop's town. So there are beautiful churches to be seen, especially the cathedral right in the center of the town.

  • Swimming

There is a large swimming center in Bressanone/Brixen, in which you can swim, use the sauna, get wellness treatment. When I was there, their parking lot was so overcrowded on a normal weekday, one hour after opening time, that they needed assistants to direct the parking. I decided to do another hike instead. It seems to be very popular.

  • Hiking

There are good hiking trails, starting right in the center of the town. The tourist information has leaflets and information brochures about the length and difficulty of the trails. They start from easy hiking to more strenuous ones, but close to Bressanone/Brixen there is no real mountain climbing.I did some of the trails and enjoyed the great...

  • Palace of prince bishops courtyard

The palace is located directly across the domplatz from the dom. The early Renaissance palace has a fascinating 3 story arcaded loggia. Many of the rooms are decorated with well preserved furnishings and artwork ranging from 300 to 600 years old.During the winter months the ground floor houses a rare collection of about 100 carved nativity scenes....

  • Bressanone / Brixen dom / duomo

Bressanone's dom ( cathedral ) is located at the domplatz ( duomo piazza ) in the very center of altstadt. As is typical of central European cathedrals, it is unbelievably large and took about 600 years to complete. Construction was started more than 900 years ago, and the twin campaniles ( bell towers ) were completed about 300 years ago. To...

  • Bressanone / Brixen city piazza / platz

The city of Bressanone / Brixen has one of the most fascinating and beautiful central squares on the continent. Shown in the center of the photo is the Gothic / Renaissance city hall. The brilliantly gilded copper roof is more interesting than the famous roof over Maximillian's balcony in nearby Innsbruck, but without the tourists. In Germany and...

  • Aferer Geiseln (Dolomites)

This is a small and rather little visited area in the Geisler group but just east of itabove the Würzjoch is the popular Peitlerkofel/Sass Putia which is easily reached and offers a great view. I shall climb it in a few weeks when my sister will come to visit me.

  • The Plose

The Plose is a mountain southeast of Brixen. A road goes up to about 2000 m . From there several ski lifts open skiing opportunities up to the more than 2500 m high top. The highlight is the nice view of the Geisler mountains, the northernmost group of the Dolomites. There is also a road going along these mountains up to the Würzjoch and down to...

Bressanone Restaurants

  • Tasty sudtirol food

Our friends took us here for a dinner of typical local food... and it was a good choice! An antipasti plate of local cured meats and cheese (the speck in this area is the best I've had anywhere), wine (white) soup, and a plate of assorted starches: Knudel, spinach filled ravioli and herbed noodles in a cream sauce. Yum! Very filling and very tasty!...

  • Delicious restaurant in downtown Bolzano

The food, beer, wine and service were absolutely terrific. Our friend owns the restaurant (Andreas Fink) and made sure we had a delicious and lively evening. He'd put a silly reserved sign on our table, and special notes in the menus for the men. When all was said and done, we had no idea of the price of the meal, as he would not show it to us, nor...

  • Pizza and salad in the valley

For a group of 5 we had 3 pizza, one grilled vegetables with grilled brie plate, one order of insalata caprese and one order of the salad bar. 3 beers and 2 radlers. All of it was excellent and delicious, served on the deck, under the sun umbrella on a warm day. Very nice. Mark's olive, ham, mushroom and artichoke pizza was pretty darned...

Bressanone Transportation

  • Walking

For exploring Bressanone/Brixen it's best to walk. The old part is off-limits to cars anyway. Many alleys are really narrow, everything is close , so walking is your best choice.

  • Excellent Train Connections

Bressanone/Brixen is on the main line from Munich - Innsbruck - to Verona. There is even a through- train to Venice once a day. Sometimes there are specials for taking the train to Venice from Munich, so using one of these specials and getting off in Bressanone/Brixen is a lot cheaper than buying a regular ticket. The train station is not in the old...

    Any Panificio- Backerei

What to buy: Well- I am Italian and I love pizza pasta and bread... (and what about the mandolino :)..). Bread that you can buy here is very different from the Italian, they cover it with different tipe of seeds. They also make a wonderful type of black bread with variants like nuts and honey ...delicious !
I also reccomend Strudel and home-made marmelades.

  • Mercato del Pane e dello Strudel.

Every year, at the end of september and the beginning of october an interesting food market is held at Domplatz (the Cathedral square). Here you can see lots of small houses where you can buy various kinds of bread and sweets made by bakeries located in South Tyrol. You can also sample some bread. There are ordinary bread and sweet ones as...

  • Don' t go in a restaurant too late

This is a tip for those, like me, who forget to look at the clock. Maybe it can happen quite often while you're on holiday... anyway in Bressanone, and SudTirol in general, you can't hope to find a Restaurant's kitchen open after 22. They simply close and offer you what they call "cold dishes"... such as speak cheese and bread...

Bressanone Warnings and Dangers

  • Hiking Trails

When I was in Bressanone/Brixen, there were about 2 or 3 more weeks of the hiking season left, depending on the weather. By the condition of some trails you could tell that the season was almost over. Not all trailmarks were still easy to find, some - painted on rocks -had been overgrown and some others had simply disappeared. I had to give up one...

While I was walking near the river, I noticed these signs, warning people of sudden waves. As the signs were up on the path and the water was several meters below, I didn't take them very seriously. But when it had rained for some time, I could watch the water rising. It had also changed from being a calm river to a pretty wild one. So I looked at...

Villa Rifesser is a magnificent 500 year old villa located midway between the main city square and the train station. The architecture is characteristic of south Tirol Renaissance era.
