Catanzaro

by fool_moon

Catanzaro is the capital of Calabria even if Reggio is the biggest city. There must be political reasons for it because Catanzaro has no big things to offer. Its actually difficult to reach because from the train station you have to go by bus to overcome mor than 300 meters of altitude. Even the cathedral was opened only in 1960. Due to several earthquakes there is practically no historical center as one is used to have in other Italian cities.

Reggio Calabria

by fool_moon

Reggio Calabria was almost destroyed by an earthquake in 1908 so the "historic" buildings are rather copies of the originals. A famous Italian poet called the Lungomare (beachside) Matteoti the most beautiful kilometer of Italy. I cannot agree but maybe the man didnt travel a lot in his home country.Real nice is the pedestrian zone of Corso Garibaldi which leads you from the village green along the dom, government palace and theater to the Archeological museum with the two famous giants of Riace (2 bronze statues of warriors). Dont forget to enter the fantastic "pastericcia" on the dom square for the cone filled with sweet ricotta cheese.

Tropea - Isola Bella

by fool_moon

Tropea has not only wonderful white sand beaches but is a charming village with a lot of history. The church on the former island is a real photographers delight but you should go up and visit also the gardens and the little museum upstairs. While the church entrance is free, for the rest you have to spend 1 Euro but you can shoot nice pictures.

Cosenza - historic center

by fool_moon

The Corso Telesio brings you from the bridge over the Busento river up to the City green. On your way up you will pass the dom built in the 12th century where Isabel of Aragon's grave is. Further up you come to the Piazza XV Marzo with the government palace and the theater.

The Flying Jesus

by maybetara

45 minutes from Cosenza, Calabria by car, Maratea in the region of Basilicata located just above Calabria, is home to the iconic religious symbol - the flying Jesus. Apparently, the second largest semblance of Jesus Christ made by man (the biggest being the Christ figure in Rio de Janeiro), the Jesus figure in Maratea sits at the highest point of one of Maratea's many mountainous peaks. When observed at night from a distance, the huge form, its whiteness superimposed against the black of night, looks as if it's flying. Hence its name.
