Calabrian Train

by fool_moon

There is a train most of the time with only one waggon as pictured which connects the places on the Calabrian westcoast with the main railways. Its going between Lamezia Terme Central (serves the only international airport) via Pizzo-Zambrone-Vibo-Parghelia-Tropea etc. to the junction of Rosarno.

Acri is a small town in the south of Italy (Calabria) -- though within the last five years have made several improvements on it, adding concert halls, new parks and stores -- though not a very rich place on top of the mountain..But my family is there and visiting always seems to be a problem, since the closest train statian is Castiglione Cosentino which is 45 minutes away (driving) and the closest airport is Lamezia Terme which is about 2 hours away driving. Well they opened up a bus company right in town and if we arrive in Rome we can land right in town, the companies are Simet and I.A.S. Touring S.R.L. the website I was looking for .. http://www.busweb.it/privati/ricerca/TestTratte.asp (which might be slightly different depending what country you are in viewing this.) Though if you are leaving from Rome where my brother is you can buy the ticket in the station (Roma Tributina) or in...

To bridge or not to bridge?

by lichinga

The debate around Messina's straits bridge construction is a very old one. Every one has a firm idea, on both sides, every Governement makes promises, feasibilities studies have been made and remade tenths of times, transport and econiomic development simulation have been made several times.... still nothing moves. Oh yes, lots of money are spent in studies, then they are consiodered doubtful, politically biased or unreliable and contracted once more!In the meanwhile, lots of boats connect Messina (Sicily), Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria and things do not appear that bad, even in stormy conditions, such as today!

Travelling Calabria

Ferrovie della Calabria (Calabrian Railways) has a very simple system of ticket selling:you can buy tickets for 30,60,90 or 120 kms in advance and just stamp them on a machine at the station or if you are not certain of the distance just let the controller take whatever he needs. 120 km brings you around a lot in the province and costs 5 Euro.Bus tickets are always available in tabacco shops.
