monastery aboce Amalfi by sandysmith On the mountain above Amalfi is the ex-monastery of Benedictines dedicated to S.Lorenzodel Piano and built by the doge Mansone III in 980 for the unmarried and virtuous women of the town. In 1840 it was transformed in a cemetery. In the monastery, today the seat of the municipality, you can see the text of the nautical system of Amalfi, the famous Tabula Civitatis Malphae. These tables are about the navigation: the freight's price, captain and sailor's duty, the indemnety of the assurances of naval trades, etc.

crucifixion fresco by sandysmith One of the chapels at the back of the cathedral clositer has a really beautiful fresco - still with vibrant colours - of the crucifixion (from the school of Giotto) with the suffering Mary and the disciples, the soldiers above in Angevin armour and on high the angel who receives the soul of the repentant thief.

cathedral interior by sandysmith Peep through the bronze doors from the back of the central nave for an overall view of the cathedral. If a mass or a wedding is not taking place then the cathedral can be entered - provided you are dressed respectfully. The liturgical area is dominated by an 13th century wooden crucifix whilst above the altar is painting by Andrea Dell'Asta from 1715 of the martydon of St Andrew. This same artist painted the splendid boxed ceiling (1702) depicting the "flagellation", the "crucifixion of St Andrrew" and the "miracle of the manna".

St Andrew in the crypt by sandysmith Steps lead from the Basilica to the crypt - the "house of St Andrew". During the 4th crusade in 1206 his remains were brougth from Constantinople to Amalfi and laid under the central altar. The huge statue of St Andrew is the work of Michelangelo Naccherino - the bronze weighs about 800 cwt!
|
bell tower by sandysmith The Bell tower on the the left of the cathedral has kept its original style and structure despite many renovations. A mixture of norman and arabic styles with its double and triple light windows, topped with majolica domes, it was built between 1180-1276. It was once used as a defensive tower in 1389.

Paradise Cloister by sandysmith The church is free to enter but there is a small charge to visit the cloister and crypt. We ummed and ah'd about paying when it was such a nice day outside but I'm glad we eventually did. The cloister was a beautiful oasis from the crowds and the heat of the day well worth the time spent there so don't miss out on it. The cloister, commissioned by arcibishop Filippo Augustariccio, was built between 1266 and 1268. It was named Paradise Cloister for its function of cemetery for the noble men of Amalfi. The rays of sunlight amongst the whitewashed quadrangle interlaces arabesque arches resting on 120 marble columns was a special sight.

one of the chapels by sandysmith The cloister was surrounded by six chapels from the 13-14th century decorated with frescos. Five of these chapels are still well kept and contain the ancient coffins of noble Amalfitans of the past, such as decurione Publio Ottavio Rufo (IV century). The coffins are decorated with bassorilievo sculptures.
|
original columns by sandysmith The last chapel in the cloister leads to the Basilica of the Crucifix - this was the first cathedral of Amalfi built in the 9th century. Restoration was finished in 1994 and now the open-sided gallery decorated with twin and single arches can be admired. Take note of the columns of the original structure and the apsis with residual traces of colurful frescoes.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN by travelgourmet As you enter the town of Amalfi through the Arch at the waterfront, you come upon a square. Many shops and restaurants surround this square, but your eyes will take you higher up and to the right. It is the Duomo of Amalfi, St. Andrews Cathedral, orginally built in the ninth century, remodeled in 1203, and rebuilt in 1865. The Campanile, bell tower, built in the twelfth century, dominates the sky line. To reach the catherdral you must look at the steep stairs to get your body ready for the struggle to the top, then start your ascent up the stairs. It is like the stairway to heaven. If you can, climb to the top and touch the beautiful stones that make up this grand structure. The feeling of the past comes alive with your touch. The bronze door was cast in Constantinople in 1066. Inside is the crypt holding the remains of St. Andrew the Apostle, brought to the Duomo in the thirteenth century. Leave a Comment Address: Center of the townDirections: Off the Amalfi Drive, in Amalfi, to the right of the square. Can't miss it as it has a stairway to heaven.

Emerald Water by Jetgirly In Italian, grotto means cave. The Grotto Smerelda is The Emerald Cave, where the water shimmers an eerie greenish-blue and stalactites and stalagmites grow around you. It is a quick boat trip (15 minutes or so) from the port at Amalfi, but it can also be reached by land. Entrance to the grotto is EUR 5 and includes a brief boat trip in Italian (bad English upon request). Oarsmen expect a tip. Recommended for people with kids and/or nothing better to do. Leave a Comment Directions: Best accessed by boat.
