The Baroque interior of the church dates only to the 18th century and hides the original Roman structure. On your way out, check out the bronze doors, the first of their type to be brought to Italy from Constantinople.

The bell tower was constructed between 1180 and 1276 in the Moorish fashion. It rises prominently above the city and is clearly visible from the water.

  • A dramatic sea-level cavern with dazzling green light effects taken when the light of the sun comes through its tunnel, is only reachable by boat. This famous spot is located in Conca dei Marini. Boats go from the main pier at Amalfi. But since our homebase was in Praiano, so, we rented a boat from there with a guide.

Amalfi town center is not huge so it is a good idea to talk a walk around the narrow streets and explore the curious little shops along the way. Around the main square or Piazza Duomo, there are several pricey restaurants & souvenir shops but if you walk further ahead into the little streets, you will discover more little squares & shops that are less crowded and more interesting

Just be watchful of local vehicles that run through these narrow streets!

The Duomo was founded in the 9th century (basilica portion), added onto (cathedral), and later restored in the 18th century (to the dismay of modern-day art historians). Nevertheless, it is a unique blend of Moorish and early Gothic style architecture. The bell tower was constructed in the 12th century. The bronze door was cast in Constantinople in the 11th century.

Inside you will find a museum housing sarcophagi, sculptures, and other relics from the cathedral, as well as the crypt of St. Andrew. The cathedral was built in the 13th century to house the saint's remains, which were brought over from Constantinople. Beautiful marble and painted ceilings within the cathedral are examples of 18th century restoration.

When you walk around or drive around, you will notice lots orchard groves and trees of lemons and oranges. However, you will see more lemons than oranges. The Amalfi coast is famed for its production of Limoncello liqueur, which is produced from the abundant lemons from these areas.

I loved this quiet fishing village. Not many tourists here. Felt more like the real Italy.

    Amalfi - Church

Dating from the XIX century but several times reconstructed and adapted, the cathedral of St. Andre shows an oriental look, with evidence to the Paradise Cloister built in the XIII century. The kids followed me, but, to be honest, Fernanda preferred to walk along the streets Genova and Capuano, because they… you know.

A curious question: People visiting Amalfi do really care about churches?

The day trip to Capri and along the Costiera Amalfitana is something which will stay with you for the rest of your life.
The colour of the waters, the rugged coastline and the houses perched precariously on the cliff tops are pictures embedded in your brain.

This boat trip was part of my prize winning trip to Italy.
It was organised through http://www.sunland.it/ Sunland Viaggi
