The charm and relaxed atmosphere of the entire Amalfi coast from Sorrento and Positano to the township of Amalfi was captured by the numerous fresh produce stalls that line the narrow cliff hugging roads. We stopped a few of these stalls and purchased refreshing frozen lemon drinks along with fresh fruit including the magnificent Italian grapes.
BE WARNED THOUGH.......The owners of these stalls become VERY angry and sometimes ABUSIVE if you simply stop and take a photograph BEFORE purchasing from them! Even though Anne is pictured here selecting items for lunch the owner became very animated while I was attempting a photograph.

When we arrived in Amalfi the sky was blue and the weather was very warm, considerining it was October! I was in posession of a severe flu (or it was in posession of me!) and I opted out of a swim. Anne (far right) and our travelling friend Brian and Amanda enjoyed the swim and advised me that the water was a lot mor salty than the beaches that we are used to in Australia and therefore you float "higher" in the water. I became the official photographer and bag minder!

Mountains standing proud above rocky cliffs and an azure sea. Lemon trees bursting with vivid scent and color. Patchwork patterns of ancient olive groves and vineyards clinging to the hillside. Is there a better way to define the elegant Italian paradise of the Amalfi Coast?
The town is situated amoung the soft green hills and valleys, opposite the azure sea and under a beautiful blue sky. In this village the air is heavy with the scent of roses and carnations. As you walk along the narrow, paved streets, the pink flowers of the oleanders hang over crumbling stone walls - and the effect is one of mellow beauty.

The Duomo is situated in the center of the town and was built during the 6th Century to honour St. Andrew the Apostle, whose remains are in a crypt within. Take particular note of the Duomo's Oriental style. The bronze doors were the first in Italy, made from bronze brought back from Constantinople by a local nobleman, Pantaleone di Mauro Comite. The Cathedral is a meeting place for locals and tourists alike and the entire towm seems to extend from this cathedral and plaza.

The Piazza Duomo is a lively place with a number of bars where you can eat/drink in the square, a drinking fountain and numerous shops extending along the road away from the coast. Some evenings they have music at the bottom of the Duomo steps

As I mentioned, lemons seem to be the most popular item on the entire Amalfi Coast. You will find all kinds of shops marketing these lemon wares and the lemons that are offered for eating do not seem to have the sour/tart flavour that you can expect from a normal lemon.
The lemons are huge and can be seen growing on the hills around the entire coast. You will also pass many stalls along the cliff top roads offering refreshing lemon drinks and fruit produce.

Lemons are very popular on the entire Amalfi and the lemons do not seem to have the sour/tart flavour that you can expect from a normal lemon. The lemons are huge and can be seen growing in the hills around the entire coast. The area has also made a big industry from the lemons and you can purchase just about any item you can think of from lemon candles to lemon gelati.

situated right in the middle of town and less that one minute from the beach, the Duomo the perfect place to sit and enjoy a meal or simply have coffee and cake or a gelati. Lemons are very popular here and they do not seem to have the sour/tart flavour that you can exoect from a normal lemon.

Built between 1180-1276 the St Andrews Cathedral bell tower has been renovated on numerous occasions over the years and has been lucky to keep its original look and design. Based on styles from the Norman and arabic periods it has double and triple light windows, topped with majolica domes and is a beautiful sight from most vantage points around the town. This photograph was taken on the beach.

The Cathedral of Amalfi is made of two communicating churches, a crypt, an atrium, a tower and a cloister.
The first part of this complex dates back from the 9th century. All that is actually left from this first part is a few columns and probably three arches. These last ones have been remodeled in the 14th century. Further remodelings have been going on until the 1800's.
The whole church is a mix of styles: Moorish, Norman and Gothic. Not to forget the bell tower that is Romanesque and dates back from the 12th century. Its green and yellow glazed tiles are very much in contrast with the black and white church.
The Cloister that is part of the church - Chiostro del Paradiso - is decorated with beautiful Moorish arches.
