The cathedral of Amalfi, dedicated to Saint Andrew, is built in "romanesque-amalfitan" style - completely amalfitan that adds to the romanesque elements of Moorish and Byzantine art. The original structure dates back to the 9th century but was completely rebuilt in 1203.

Pompei is the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. It was founded in the 7th Century on a prehistoric lava flow of Vesuvio. It became a roman colony in 80 BC and prospered as a major port and trading town until it was devastated by an earthquake in 63 AD. It was largely rebuilt when Vesuvio erupted in 79 AD and completely covered it. It is adviseable to spend a whole day here as there is so much to see.

You can get to Capri from the marina in Amalfi. The ferry also stops off at Positano.
In the centre of Capri is Piazza Umberto, a small enclosed square resembling a courtyard. An afternoon can be spent there wandering around narrow lanes with tiny houses and villas.

Positano is the most beautiful town on the Amalfi coast, with small houses built into cliffs and alley ways with expensive boutiques. In the heart of the town is the Santa Maria Assunta Church with it's amazing coloured dome.

On the mountain above Amalfi is the ex-monastery of Benedictines dedicated to S.Lorenzodel Piano and built by the doge Mansone III in 980 for the unmarried and virtuous women of the town. In 1840 it was transformed in a cemetery. In the monastery, today the seat of the municipality, you can see the text of the nautical system of Amalfi, the famous Tabula Civitatis Malphae. These tables are about the navigation: the freight's price, captain and sailor's duty, the indemnety of the assurances of naval trades, etc.

Steps lead from the Basilica to the crypt - the "house of St Andrew". During the 4th crusade in 1206 his remains were brougth from Constantinople to Amalfi and laid under the central altar. The huge statue of St Andrew is the work of Michelangelo Naccherino - the bronze weighs about 800 cwt!

On the left hand side of the Basilica of the Crucifix two small chapels are decorated with frescoes of the miracles and effigies of the saints - including the Beato Fra' Gerardo Sasso, founder of the order of the Maltese knights of St John.

The last chapel in the cloister leads to the Basilica of the Crucifix - this was the first cathedral of Amalfi built in the 9th century.
Restoration was finished in 1994 and now the open-sided gallery decorated with twin and single arches can be admired. Take note of the columns of the original structure and the apsis with residual traces of colurful frescoes.
