Just taking pictures. by unravelau I wouldn't drive anywhere after a meal because if you've been drinking it could impair your judgement. One slip or lapse of attention on the Amalfi road could be fatal. There is one corner where the bus couldn't get around without doing a tricky manouver which involved part of the back of the bus actually over the edge...............if at all nervy make a decision to just take photos the whole way and don't look down. Cars waiting at the red light by Karlie85 Amalfi is not a place for drivers to begin with. There is pretty much the one main road that goes up through the town. It is extremely narrow and covered with pedestrians. Even though it is a road, there are many times more people than cars on it. We drove to Amalfi from Cosenza, but we didn't drive in Amalfi at all, other than while we were searching for our hotel. We drove up the main road, not knowing about the red light. As you drive up this road, there are two single traffic lights, one on each end, either red or green. We got to the far end and had to turn around. There was a red light. There were no cross streets, no cross walk, nothing. Coming from North America where there is traffic everywhere, we thought it was sort of weird that there was a red light there for seemingly no reason, that didn't change for about 5 solid minutes. Our North American brains just couldn't figure out why there would be a red light there for seemingly no reason. We then figured out that the road is an alternating one-way road, so you can go one way for a few minutes, then the lights switch and traffic can go the other way for a few minutes. There is not, however, any type of sign near these traffic lights indicating this, so we went around the lady stopped in front of us and drove the wrong way down a one way road, and an incredibly narrow one at that! Yes, there should be a sign, but there isn't. So no matter how impatient you are, stay stopped at the red light!

Amalfi's stairs are steep, but the view is great by Bobsy Be careful when walking up Amalfi's steps. Not all are well lit as they could be, and some sets require a good level of endurance, so you may want to stay closer to ground level if you have small children or anyone who may have trouble with climbing hills.
