Anacapri basks on the hill above Capri, and is a quieter, more 'normal' town. Accommodation is generally cheaper, although you're still not far from the hub of things, and there is a regular bus service. From Anacapri you can take the chairlift up to the top of Monte Solare and enjoy the views before the trip back down (on foot if you're so inclined). San Michele, the home of Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe (see book section below) is located in Anacapri, and is open to the public.
Anacapri - Chair lift
The Monte Solaro chair lift station is located in Anacapri, in Caposcuro street (near Piazza Vittoria). The facility allows you to go from Anacapri (286 metres above sea level) to the top of Monte Solaro (589 metres above sea level).
The facility, built in 1952 by engineer Uliscia, was totally renovated in 1998 and reopened in 1999. It has 156 seats and it takes 12 minutes to reach the top which offers wonderfully views over the island and the sea.
Open: March-October: 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. November-February: 10.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
Anacapri, High on The Mountain
We were taken to Anacapri to replace the Blue Grotto tour as the tide was too high for entry. It was a blessing in disguise as on a very wet day we did not feel like being on the ocean in a row boat. A mini bus took us up the very steep road to the town, on the way we gained spectacular views of Capri, Marina Grande and the ocean. Anacapri is a very nice, but small town on the top of the mountain. There are small shops and tourist stalls, and some good cafes and restaurants. The best thing about the town is the views obtained, take some of the trails outside the town centre and you will be rewarded. We visited a magnificent villa built by an English doctor over a century ago, it had a nice garden with exceptional views. Anacapri is well worth a visit.

Anacapri is a Community on the island of Capri. He is located high on the hills to the west.
It has a separate status from the city of Capri. The most important sight in the village is the Villa San Michele.
As opposed to the City of Capri, Anacapri is much cheaper to visit and stay at.
French composer Claude Debussy was a regular visitor to Anacapri.
There is a bus service, via numerous hairpin bends, from Marina Grande and Capri to Anacapri
Mount Solaro is the highest place on the island - 589 metres above sea level. You can either walk there or take the chairlift.
The chairlift station is quite near Piazza Vittoria and allows you to reach the top quite quickly while you enjoy a splendid view of Anacapri and the gulf of Naples.
This place is the vast panoramic view going from the gulf of Naples to the gulf of Salerno, passing from the plain of Anacapri, the Sorrento peninsula, and Capri with its Faraglioni. The way back on foot is one of the most beautiful walks on the island. The quite smooth route allows also a visit to Cetrella, where you can admire the lonely church of S. Maria.

Villa San Michele is the 19th century mansion of Axel Munthe, a Capri personality,
It is located on the north-eastern side of 'Anacapri, 327 metres above sea level. Here was an ancient Roman imperial villa, whose ruins were preserved by Axel Munthe and are now to be found in the garden. In the area there were the remains of a medieval chapel later moved to its present position by Munthe himself.
open daily 9:00-17:00
Faro Anacapri Punta Carena
This picture of the lighthouse is taken from the boat. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go to the lighthouse itself on the island, but it is easy enough to do. It only takes 10 minutes by bus to get to the extreme western end of the island, called "Limmo", from the Latin Limen = boundary. The headland is called "Karena", from the Greek word, which means "„headland-cape".
On this headland, a hundred years ago, was built the "Lighthouse" which is considered the second most powerful one in Italy, after Genova.
Faro Anacapri Punta Carena
This is also the departure or arrival point of a very enjoyable walk along the north-western coast of the island, known as "The Walk of the Fortifications" because it passes through the ruins of the fortifications built by the French in1808 and which have been recently
I guess I have to go back here to see all this. But this time I will make sure not to go on such a busy time of the year. The busses were packed with people, and there was a long line-up to get into the bus. There wasn't enough time to take the bus, get to the lighthouse, hike and get back on time to the boat.
