by ruki Anacapri basks on the hill above Capri, and is a quieter, more 'normal' town. Accommodation is generally cheaper, although you're still not far from the hub of things, and there is a regular bus service. From Anacapri you can take the chairlift up to the top of Monte Solare and enjoy the views before the trip back down (on foot if you're so inclined). San Michele, the home of Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe (see book section below) is located in Anacapri, and is open to the public. Leave a Comment

by ruki Villa Jovis is the largest and most sumptuous of all the Roman villas on Capri. Located on top of Mount Tiberio, at 354 meters above sea level, in an outstanding position, it was the main residence of Emperor Tiberius, and reflects his austere personality it its design. Leave a Comment

On the north-western promontory of the island, draped over the capes of Vetereto and Arcera, there is another Roman imperial villa called "Damecuta", name of uncertain provenance that also indicates the whole headland's area and the pinewoods. Standing in a solitary, lonely position, it resembles Villa Jovis with its promenade and hemicycle. The view from Damecuta comprises a panorama which includes spectacular views all over the Bay of Naples, from isle of Ischia, Cape Miseno and Phlegraean Fields up to Sorrento peninsula on the other side, with the Vesuvius in the middle. by ruki The Marina Grande (Large Seashore) is the harbor of Capri, located in the bay on north side of the island, in front of Naples and its gulf. The harbor consists of two large arms: the western one is the former and it works as commercial port, where ferries and hydrofoils berth, while the east arm is the latter and it is occupied by the tourist port, where pleasure boats park. by ruki The Pizzolungo (High Peak) is a quaint rock shape, a crag that stands out among the greenery and assumes different aspects according to the point from which you see it. Seen from the front it shows a compact and heavy structure, tormented and rough, which suddenly turns to its sharp point. Seen from behind it shows a slender and smooth face rising upwards to the sky, with a light appearance. At the foot of the Pizzolungo there is a graceful viewpoint right over Faraglioni, divided into two small balconies facing both sides of the crags. Leave a Comment

The top of the chair lift on Mount Solaro by Willettsworld, 2 more photos The Monte Solaro chair lift station is located in Anacapri, in Caposcuro street (near Piazza Vittoria). The facility allows you to go from Anacapri (286 metres above sea level) to the top of Monte Solaro (589 metres above sea level). The facility, built in 1952 by engineer Uliscia, was totally renovated in 1998 and reopened in 1999. It has 156 seats and it takes 12 minutes to reach the top which offers wonderfully views over the island and the sea. Open: March-October: 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. November-February: 10.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Leave a Comment

It's a 45 minute, largely uphill, walk to get to this Roman villa, but worth it if you have the time and energy. You'll walk along some fascinating little lanes on the way, have fabulous views .... and the opportunity to peer into numerous villa gardens! The Roman Emperor Tiberius had this place built for his retirement. In fact, he ruled the empire for 10 years from Capri, which is a testament to the efficiency of the Roman communications system. The villa covers almost the whole of the summit of Mount Tiberio, with magnificent views across the Bay of Naples. Although it is not in terribly good condition, its treasures long removed, its gardens overgrown and its walls crumbling, the villa still gives a glimpse into how the ultra-rich lived thousands of years ago. Most fascinating is the sytem of canals and water-storage areas which the architects had to design in order to supply not only the villa's everyday needs but also its baths and its vast gardens. More evidence of Roman efficiency! It's worth checking that the villa is open before you start out on the walk. Although it is supposed to be open from 9 am to an hour before dusk, I doubt this is the case throughout the year. This 10-minute walk from the Piazzetta is one of the easiest and most popular on Capri. The gardens, named for Emperor Augustus, were built over Roman ruins by German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp in the 19th century. Multiple terraces provide fabulous panoramas of the Tyrrhenian Sea, soaring cliffs, the Faraglione and an eagle-eye view of Via Krupp - a road built by the same creator of the gardens. Winding down the cliffside in a series of stomach-churning, hairpin turns, it leads to Marina Piccola and a couple of the very few island beaches. It's also occasionally closed (as when we were there) due to falling rock. Il Faraglione are iconic of Capri, being the most photographed and recognizable of her natural wonders. Faraglione is a generic term for sections of rock that have been isolated from the mainland and eroded over time into cone-like formations. Of these famous three, the closest to the coast - di Terra or la Stella - is actually still attached to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. The smallest, di Mezzo for "middle", has an opening large enough for boats to pass through. Di Fuori/ Scopolo is the farthest away and home to a very rare, blue lizard found nowhere else on earth. Because it's so easy to get to and FREE, this spot tends to draw large crowds and I couldn't get decent pictures of the gardens for the people everywhere. I'd recommend doing this one early in the morning and then moving on to more remote locations. Leave a Comment Address: Via Matteotti, Capri townDirections: Starting at the Piazzetta, head south on Via Vittorio Emanuele and straight through Via F. Serena and then hang a right at Via Matteotti. Combine this with a visit to Certosa di San Giacomo.

We loved this place so much that I'm listing it as a "Thing to Do" rather than a restaurant/night spot. We'd stumbled in (up?) here after fleeing the early afternoon crowds and spent a blissful hour-and-a-half far above the tour-group-choked Piazzetta. Pulalli is hidden away in a cozy aerie right next to the clock tower and offers a full bar and long wine list as well as small-plate appetizers and entrees. The interior has a warm but contemporary feel and there is a lovely little terrace on the Piazzetta side. The REAL prize is a tiny balcony - just big enough for two - with views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Solaro. From this sunny, romantic spot we watched the activity below in relative peace (other than quarter-hour bonging from the clock) as the bar was practically deserted in mid afternoon. Our beer and wine both came with the great little dishes of snacks that seem to be standard with table service in Italian bars. I read that this is a terrific place to go for lunch as so few tourists realize it's there. I'm sure it's even more wonderful at night! To find Pulalli, look for the small arch at the base of the clock tower, on the Piazzetta side, and follow the stairs up. It's closed Tuesdays and from December - February. During our fall visit they closed at about 3:30 PM and opened again in early evening. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Umberto I, 4 , CapriPhone: Ph. +39 081 8374108Directions: Virtually adjoining the Piazzetta's clocktower. In photo #2, you can see the little arch and stairwell (just left of the green/white awning) and the terrace that faces the Piazzetta (right of clock face).Website: http://www.capri.com/en/c/pulalli-wine-bar

La Grotta Azzurra - Capri's Pride by Krystynn There are many caves in and around the isle of Capri. But none can compare with the most famous cave of all caves - yes, the La GROTTA AzZURRA aka The Blue Grotto. Discovered in 1826 by a German writer (August Kopisch), the Blue Grotto continues to stun visitors with its unique beauty. No... on second thoughts, unique is definitely an understatement. The most mesmorizing aspect of the cave is the sunlight beaming through an underwater cavity... and shining through the water like a laser! Words just can't seem to describe how awestruck I was when I beheld the stunning beauty of the cave! Imagine this sight - the blue reflection from the sunlight illuminating the cave. No special effects needed! Stupendo. Just awesome. How to get to the Blue Grotto? No problem. There are many ways to reach the Blue Grotto. By boat from Marina Grande, by bus (from Anacapri) or by taxi.... or walk up the 800 Phoenician steps. We chose the boat option obviously. ;-) Be prepared to pay, pay and pay should you choose this option: yes, one for the boat ride out to the Grotto; once for the little row boat ride into the Grotto and once for the entry fee. Oh c'mon.... don't be such a cheapskate! The boat option is actually the most ideal way to reach the Grotto. ;-) The Grotto can't be visited during poor weather. Why? The sea would be too choppy.... (read: too dangerous!).
