our boat for Tour of the island
4 more images

You Capri trip is not complete without at least a few hours spent on the Mediterranean sea surrounding the island.

A tour around the island of Capri by boat is, without doubt, a unique and truly exhilarating experience.
Whether you choose to join an organised tour, or rent a private boat with captain, taking to the turquoise waters is the only way to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the island.
In fact, many of the most enchanting stretches of the Capri coastline are completely inaccessible by land. By boat visitors are able to reach those secluded bays which are just perfect for swimming or sun bathing - far from the crowds crammed onto the tiny pebble beaches.

In high season the waters around the island of Capri are extremely busy and one be constantly aware of the dangers presented by motorboats, falling rocks and unmarked fishing nets.

Traditional postcard from Capri, the Faraglioni stacks are living proof of the continual evolutionary process of the earths crust and of atmospheric events, such as the wind and movement of the waves.
The Faraglioni have an average height of 100 meters and in the Faraglione di Mezzo there is a cavity, the tunnel, of world wide fame. The passage through the rock is approximately 56 meters long, 13 meters wide. The roof of the tunnel is 15 meters above sea level. A a few meters separate the Faraglione di Mezzo from the Faraglione di Fuori.

Tour around the island:
Departure time: 9.30 am - 1.55 pm - 2.25 pm - 2.55 pm - 3.30 pm.
Duration: 1 hour about.
Price: Euro 13,00.

What to see in Capri? Marina Piccola -Small Harbor, the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone masses called Sea Stacks that stand out of the sea (the Faraglioni), the Blue Grotto - Grotta Azzurra and Augustus Gardens ...

The Gardens of Augustus are only few minutes walk from the Piazzetta, near the Via Krupp, the road which was the idea of A. F. Krupp, the German steel industrialist, who - for this end- purchased the "Fondo Certosa" (Certosa Estate), on a part of which rise the Gardens.
The road -today still closed to the public- was built in 1902 on a project by Emilio Mayer. It starts here and characteristically zig-zags its way to Marina Piccola. According to architect R. Pane, it proves "that even a road can be a work of art".
The charming and panoramic Via Tragara leads to a Belvedere bearing the same name and to the Faraglioni rocks lower down.

La Grotta Azzurra
A magic no word or image could ever describe. It is a 60 metre long, 25 metre wide cavity.
To get into it, you need to take one of the small rowing boats moored outside the cave. Since the opening is very narrow, you will have to lie on the bottom of the boat to get into the grotto (in case the sea grows rough, boat service is suspended). There is actually a bigger but completely submerged opening. This very underwater entrance allows the blue coloration of the water inside the grotto, due to a phenomenon of sunlight reflection. There is an almost surreal view in the inside, the transparency and the blue colour of the water give us the impression of navigating through a clear sky, and the boats seem to float on a fantastic universe.
It is the place, where we haven't time to visit in our trip to Capri but I want to go to there in future.

View from Mount Solaro, Anacapri
3 more images

Anacapri is a Community on the island of Capri. He is located high on the hills to the west.
It has a separate status from the city of Capri. The most important sight in the village is the Villa San Michele.

As opposed to the City of Capri, Anacapri is much cheaper to visit and stay at.
French composer Claude Debussy was a regular visitor to Anacapri.

There is a bus service, via numerous hairpin bends, from Marina Grande and Capri to Anacapri

Mount Solaro is the highest place on the island - 589 metres above sea level. You can either walk there or take the chairlift.
The chairlift station is quite near Piazza Vittoria and allows you to reach the top quite quickly while you enjoy a splendid view of Anacapri and the gulf of Naples.
This place is the vast panoramic view going from the gulf of Naples to the gulf of Salerno, passing from the plain of Anacapri, the Sorrento peninsula, and Capri with its Faraglioni. The way back on foot is one of the most beautiful walks on the island. The quite smooth route allows also a visit to Cetrella, where you can admire the lonely church of S. Maria.

-12 minutes by chairlift from Piazza Vittoria
- a 60 minute climb along the mule track from Viale A. Munthe (after Villa le Scale).
open daily in summer 9:30-17:00, last run down at 17:30, november to march last run at 15:30
Price:
€6.50 round-trip,
€5 one way

Villa San Michele is the 19th century mansion of Axel Munthe, a Capri personality,
It is located on the north-eastern side of 'Anacapri, 327 metres above sea level. Here was an ancient Roman imperial villa, whose ruins were preserved by Axel Munthe and are now to be found in the garden. In the area there were the remains of a medieval chapel later moved to its present position by Munthe himself.
open daily 9:00-17:00

Marina Grande is where the ferries dock and also where you can get a tour to the Blue Grotto. There are plenty of shops and places to eat along the waterfront and you can also catch a bus to the top or take the Funiculare. This is where you will begin and end your visit to Capri!

The Museo Della Certosa is a wonderful place to visit, specifically the Roman influenced courtyard that has wonderful views of the peaks of Capri. There is a small art gallery as well that you can visit with original oil paintings. The best part of visiting this church is the gardens and the small park behind it that offers panoramic views of the island.

Shopping Spree in Capri!

Just around the corner from the plaza by the bell tower is one of the main shopping districts of Capri, while there are many places shop, the part of town that I have pictured has the most shops in one place. You will definitely find things in these shops you won't find anywhere else, and don't worry if you don't have cash, they take all the major credit cards!

Walking through Capri

Perhaps the most satisfying way to see Capri is to just take your time and walk through the winding corridors that wrap around and through the town. With every turn there is something new to see, from a shop selling expensive jewelry to small gardens with cacti or groves of orange tree's. A walk through Capri is like a walk into a place where time stands still.

When you disembark from the Funiculare at the top, you will walk into the a plaza that overlooks the ocean and the Marina Grande. There is a gelato shop close by and plenty of benches to sit on and take in the view and get a little sun. From the plaza there are many different shops and places to eat, its the starting point to visiting Capri.

For an intoxicating view of Capri take a walk around to the backside of the island where you will find views that illustrate why Capri is one of the most beautiful places in the world. High peaks with sheer drops into a deep blue ocean that sparkles like fireflies when the sun's rays reflect off the waters. The best views of the island are from a small park that you can access from the Museo Della Certosa. There is a gate that will be on your left as you enter and you will see a narrow dirt path that leads to a grove of tree's, from there you will be treated to sweeping views of the island.

Sit in the Piazetta (Piazza Umberto)......

The bell-tower on the corner of the Piazetta

...........Capri town's tiny little square. There are four bars, the cathedral, and lots of little lanes leading off it into the hinterland of Capri town and onward to the rest of the island (they say that any lane will lead you back to the Piazetta eventually, but I don't know how true that is).

It's an Italian square in miniature, of course. a place to see, and bee seen in I suspect . when I visited I was fascinated by the four elderly gentlemen sitting spearately-but-togethr along the frontage of one of the bars. I wonder if they are always in the same place at the same time, every day, all through the year, or whether they reserve their afternoon ponderings to out-of-season times?

The bell-tower dates from the eleventh century, and was originally one of the look-out towers to watch for enemy approaches.

You can't miss the Piazetta: you'll have to walk through it to get anywhere. See if you can spot the elderly gentlemen............or the peroxide blonde.......or the sunbed-tanned ladies........or the ageing roue......
