The Piazza Umberto I has four cafes in the main square and is constantly full of people especially at the tables under the umbrellas. This is more for "being seen" than anything else because the Piazzetta is famous for the social scene.
I wouldn't call the food spectacular either ~ I had a ham & cheese sandwich and a macchiato for 10 euros!! This was because the restaurants were closed for lunch and I was hungry. Oh well, when in Rome .....

When you arrive at the cafe packed square at the Piazzetta and on top of some steps, you will find the ex Cathedral of St Stefano, constructed in the 17th century. The floors in the interior was paved with marbles taken from the Roman villas on the island of Capri.

Central Capri has a list of luxury boutiques you find in a major city like Paris, Rome & London. These boutiques line the narrow streets from the Piazzetta and you can find Ferragamo, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada and the list goes on. Besides designer brands, you can also find Italian jewelery & perfume stores which are great
You needn't walk far from one shop to the next so you'll exhaust you credit cards before you do your feet. There are other shops where you can go in and look for locally made items, mostly souvenirs and limoncello.

The Piazzetta is also known as Piazza Umberto I where from the white columned terrace of the funicular railway, you can have a fabulous view of Monte Solaro. This is also the center of social life on the island where you can not only shop but people watch
However, the Piazzetta had a more humble beginning as a fish & vegetable market. All that changed in 1938 after Raffaele Vuotto placed in some chairs in the square & changed the whole concept in the square

Be very careful of the Laser Capri boat that offers a around the island tour and optional stop at the Blue Grotto. This company is a SCAM. After paying the 11 Euro to take the around the island tour, they are supposed to let you get off at the Blue Grotto in order to get on the smaller boats to get in the Blue Grotto. On our tour, they said it was too long a line to wait and that we had to return to port. All along they knew very well the length of the line, they just chose not to mention that to you before boarding the boat becuase half of the tourist would not have gotten on if they knew this. I eventually took the bus over to the Blue Grotto instead of looking for another boat. While waiting in line for the Blue Grotto I saw the Laser Capri come back around with a new group, circle for a few minutes, as they did with us, and then head back to the port. Seems like this is there deal, they rope you in with the idea they will take you to the Blue Grotto, all along they know it will be too busy for them to actually wait. Don't waste your money, take the bus, wait on land...it is a much shorter wait. AVOID THE LASER CAPRI SCAM!

A VT friend recommended to visit the island on a scooter (motorino). At first I thought I wouldnt be a good idea, considering the steep roads and having my gf on the back seat. But it turned out to be a great idea. Not only it was an exciting experience, it also gave us a chance to go everywhere in the island, avoiding the long queues to take the bus or the expensive taxis. If you are used to riding, dont give it a second thought, go VESPA!!
You need a valid license, dont forget that! The scooters are automatic, easy as cake!

You have to take a cruise around the island, and the Blue Grotto is really worth a visit, no matter how expensive it is. In fact, if you asked me, I'd rather have gone to the Blue Grotto and not done all of the other coastal formations.
Go on Capri Foil - the cruise company that is on the pier, and next to the information center, because the first booth (Laser Capri) you see once you get off the ship is less "value for money" - trust us, the Chinese are pretty calculative.
We did the full cruise, which circled the entire island, and went into the Blue Grotto for the extra E8.50 + E3 (tip for boatman).

Some people come to Capri just to see the grotto azzurro, the blue grotto. It's a short pleasure, that's for sure. You have to pay about 8 euros to enter one of the boats. The boat gets into the grotto and takes a short tour around taking about 5 minutes. It's necessary that the sun is shining to really appreciate the deep azur of the sea that is reflected on the stone walls. A special natural phenomenon - it's worth it!

Capri is a place for the wealthy, it is a gathering place for the international jet set and if you are lucky you may see a movie star, but not on the wet day we were there. Villas dot the landscape all over the island, the beautiful warm climate has attracted the wealthy for thousands of years. The Roman Emperors including Augustus and Tiberius built villas on the island.

We were taken to Anacapri to replace the Blue Grotto tour as the tide was too high for entry. It was a blessing in disguise as on a very wet day we did not feel like being on the ocean in a row boat. A mini bus took us up the very steep road to the town, on the way we gained spectacular views of Capri, Marina Grande and the ocean. Anacapri is a very nice, but small town on the top of the mountain. There are small shops and tourist stalls, and some good cafes and restaurants. The best thing about the town is the views obtained, take some of the trails outside the town centre and you will be rewarded. We visited a magnificent villa built by an English doctor over a century ago, it had a nice garden with exceptional views. Anacapri is well worth a visit.
