The Blue Grotto, is wonderful one of nature's marvelous wonders, making it somewhat of a must-see. HOWEVER , a word of caution: I left this place feeling like I've been ripped off and taken for a ride. It's definitely a major TOURIST TRAP. So, in my opinion you need to change your mindset from idyllic travel to Disneyland ride even than it took some getting used to.
Getting to the Blue Grotto is a major endeavor. We took a motorboat from the Capri harbor, and then circled around for a while, before getting into tiny rowboats that hold four apiece plus the rower. Transportation prices are pretty steep, and so is the entrance fee, but then the water is REALLY a surreally, eerily shade of translucent blue. It glows. And it's marvelous. And while you are only in the grotto for two minutes tops, the boatman serenades you with 'Solo Mio.' Afterwards, he asks for tips.
My recommendation is to visit the Blue Grotto if you've never seen it before and can change your mindset back to 3rd grade at Disneyland. But once is more than enough, and yup, be prepared to feel like a well like a Disney TOURIST. No you can not buy Mouse ears in the Grotto.

What most people do not know, is that you can go there before either 8 or 9 in the morning and after 5 in the evening and swim into the thing for free!! In my opinion, this is a much better and more memorable way to see it. Be warned however that if the sea is rough, you should have a solid ocean swimming background and know how to time the swells so that you do not get injured. If however the sea is calm, anyone can swim into it and enjoy the beutiful view from the perfect warm water.

When you swim in and look back, the water just glows a deep, and at the same time, bright blue, and as you go deeper into the cave, it follows you in, georgeous!! I highly reccomend swimming in, you can get a bus in Anacapri and ride right down the entrance.

Piazza Umberto - eat & drink elsewhere!

  • Despite the four rival cafe's in the square giving a fantastic opportunity for people watching, the prices and the quality of food for sale are sadly under par.

A "local ham and swiss cheese" sandwich actually equated to a bit of Tesco economy ham, with a bit of cheddar chucked in for about ooh, 8 euros.

The coffee is similarly poor and overpriced - however the peroni prices are just about average for the island.

Take a short walk away from the square down one of the many alleys and you'll be rewarded with smaller bistro's and restaurants that won't require a second mortgage to dine at.

Be warned. To dine or even have a coffee in Capri is a wallet lightening experience. Even the ropiest looking café will happily sting you over Ģ5 for a coffee and a pastry.

If you must, make it last, sit back and enjoy the views and refuse to be hustled out of your seat.

  • When I first arrived on the Isle of Capri on 1 Jan, I was unsure of how I to get to Capri center. Since it was a public holiday I wasn't sure if the buses were running and I went to check at the local store and they were unsure as well (right!).

Then, my friend & I went to ask the local taxi at the Marina Grande and they told us that it's a public holiday so the buses were not running plus they told us that a walk up to Capri is about 3km uphill. So, we decided to take the taxi and they charged us 20 euros for a 5-min ride!!

Don't get suckered into their trap unless you have big & heavy luggage. What's worse was when we got up to Capri, we saw that the bus service was running!!

This is not the swimming pool. This is the local public beach.

Bring your swimming suit or ......

Surely you can find other beach if you feel lonely here.
