Only the Freshest Is Acceptable

by deecat

While in Positano, we were fortunate enough to see the recent big catch of the day being transported (via large carts). The young men were very serious about their tasks and stayed focused even with all the commotion that was going on around them with hordes of tourist asking questions. The cart is pushed and pulled by young men up the steep inclines to the local restaurants. This is a daily occurence because FRESH is what Italian cooking is all about. The seafood is local and fresh in the restaurants here in Positano. (Thank goodness!)

breakfast - Sfogliatelle

by rubbersoul75

Breakfast, Napoli styleSfogliatelle are shell shaped pastries filled usually with a sweetened ricotta. The word "sfogliatelle" means "many leaves/layers", not surprisingly the pastry consists of a bunch of crunchy layers. You've probaby seen or had these in backeries elswhere, but they were first made in Napoli, and can be found in the pasticierias (bakeries) and cafes throughout the city. It made sense to have a breakfast with this traditional Napoli sweet. Grab a seat in a cafe, perhaps along Spacanapoli and a coffee and Sfogliatelle.

Pignolate

by stephenshephard

Pignolate are a type of biscuit, basically an almond macaroon covered in pine nuts. They are delicious. I've not seen them on sale anywhere in Italy outside of Campania, in the rest of the world so far the only other place I have found them is a cafe in North Beach, San Francisco (Stella Pasticceria e Caffe).

Granita

by stephenshephard

There should be a special VT tip category for local foods I think... I've decided to put these kind of tips in 'local customs'.Anyway, lemons seem to be grown all over Campania and used in much local food and drink, e.g. limoncello in Capri. My favourite is granita made from fresh lemons, from push carts in the streets of Napoli and all over the region. A granita is simply crushed ice, sugar, and fruit juice. Very simple, but it tastes gorgeous on a hot day.
