Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Southern Italy can get very hot in summer. Do take a light jacket for any cool evenings.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Take a supply of useful medicaments with you(insect repellant, sun lotion, antiseptic cream)and stick to bottled water.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: You absolutely need a camera and comfortable walking shoes for Pompeii. You will be walking over some rough terrain. We were there in September and there was no need for a jacket. Dress light and wear a hat because you will be in the sun.
Photo Equipment: I think everyplace I took a picture in Pompeii had enough light, you can get by with a regular 35mm w/ flash camera. Although you might want a zoom lens to get a good picture of the valcano.
