Truffles or tartufo in italy - whether marinated, pated or dried etc - seem much cheaper when purchased in the open markets than in supermarkets or stores.

Be sure to patronize a real local artisan. Do not make your purchases at the commercial "factories" the tour buses to Pompeii stop it.
