 | Naples Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 544 | | We drove around Naples for a minute. We decided very quickly that we wanted to leave and see someplace worth seeing. It seemed like a really ugly, dirty place. We ended up visiting Sorrento, Positano, and Pompeii. If you find yourself in Naples just remember that not so far away there are the most amazing coastal views you have ever seen. Rent a car, the driving wasn't so insane outside of the city.

The whole area is now for pedestrians only. On the East is the Palazzo Reale and on the West is the 19th century San Francesco di Paola, which was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome. The Colonnades on both sides of the church remind one of St. Peter's Square in Rome as well. Leave a Comment

The view is really perfect. When the weather is good you can see all the gulf and the city of Naples. It is situated in the top of Vomero quartier. The ticket is 3 euro, 1,5 with discount, but if you visit Certosa di San Martino first and buy your ticket there, you will be able to enter for free in the castle. This is a site easily missed but worthwhile seeking out. The entrance sits in the back corner of a small plaza off of Via Monteoliveto. Inside there are several unique things to see. In the first chapel on the right as you walk in there is a life sized composition of terra cotta figures approaching the body of Jesus, called "Pieta". Further back, in the oldest part, the Sacristy(from the early 1500's) there are a series of inlaid wood stalls (marquetry) which are amazingly detailed! Leave a Comment Address: Via Monteoliveto

Originally built for the Kings of Spain in the 1500's and later occupied by Bourbon Kings and others, it continued to be enlarged and remodeled up into the mid 18th century. Part of it now houses the National Library of Naples and the San Carlo Theater. The many rooms and halls are very impressive mostly for the elegant designs of the walls and ceilings. Also the Kings Private Chapel is built with inlaid marble, lapis lazuli, agates, etc. Leave a Comment Address: Eastern edge of Piazza del Plebiscito

Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. It, along with Herculaneum (its sister city), was destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days on 24 August 79 AD. The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Leave a Comment

Capri is an Italian island off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic. Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (Small Harbor), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone masses called Sea Stacks that stand out of the sea. This imposing castle, surrounded by deep moats, was built in 1282 by Pierre de Chaulnes and Pierre d'Angincourt, the architects of Charles I of Anjou. It was modeled on the castle at Angers. A remarkable triumphal arc embellishes the entrances on the town side. This masterpiece bearing sculptures to the glory of the House of Aragon, was built to designs by Francesco Laurana in 1467. Access to the Sala dei Baroni is via the staircase in the inner courtyard (at the far end on the left). Leave a Comment
