The airport is not far from the city. The best way to get to the centre is by a bus called Alibus. It has two stops: Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Municipio. It takes about 20-30 minutes.
Important advice: Threre are traffic jams, so, when you go back to the airport, be sure to take the bus well before the departure of your flight (obviously, the jams depend on the time).

Arriving by plane in Naples you can take the Alibus to go into the city. The bus stop is in front of terminal 1. Busses run every 20 min., tickets 3 €, can be bought on board of the bus. The bus takes about 20 minutes and stops at Piazza Garibaldi (main station) and Piazza Municipio (near Molo Beverello, port).

If have only one day in Naples you can take a bus sightseeing like this on the picture. For 3 hours you will see the most important things in the city. It could be quite interesting and fun, especially if the weather is great.

Motorcycles and mopeds like this one are the preferred way for Neopolitano's to get around the city. There are essentially no rules for these as they go inbetween traffic, on sidewalks, left and right through traffic uturns anywhere.
These mopeds seemingly become an extention of the body as they are quite adept at sharp turns needed to weave in and out of the traffic. Just expect to have one of these trying to get in front of you at all times and you will be safe from hitting one.

Circumvesuviana, hard to pronounce but this is the train you will want to seek out to get you to Herculaneum Scavii, Pompeii Scavii and Sorrento. Go to the main trainstation at Piazza Girabaldi and find the Circumvesuviana.
The train looks pretty beatup from the outside with graffitti written all over but the inside is pretty clean and there is some AC.
Train ride to Sorrento takes about an hour. I got an all day pass which I think is the best deal for the money. I saw Herculaneum then Pompeii and finally Sorrento and returned later that same day.
The tickets don't tell you which track the train will be on so be warned. There are TV monitors though that tell you what train is arriving, if all else fails just ask someone.
You want the train the says Pompeii Scavii / Sorrento.

Hoof it! The best way to see Naples to me is to walk it. This way you can really get a sense of the hectic vibe this city has to offer. There are clearly marked crosswalks and the cars will stop. Or you can do as the Napolitanos and cross anywhere you like and dare the drivers to hit you as you stare them down.
If you go by any other means you might miss out on a slice of Italian life. Street signs are on the sides of building so unless you know exactly where you are going or want to take a taxi I would walk. There are suprises lurking around every corner from the little mom-and-pop shops to great restaurants that are hidden in back alleys.
Besides let's face it Naples traffic is a nightmare and probably the fastest way to get around on the roadways is by motorcycle or scooter but that is zaney in itself. Walking probably gets you there quicker and you get some excercise. Try to stay in a hotel near the city center and you will be within walking distance of all the sites.

There is a boat living catania every night between 7pm and 9pm (depend the day) to go to Naples (Napoli).
In the same time another boat live Naples to come in Catania!
I've payed 115 euros one way tickets! (nov 2006)
Not sure but if you get the way back in same time you've 20% on the two way (so 196 euros way and back)
It's interesting because you don't loose time!
You can bring your car!

A trip to Ischia is a really nice get away from Naples. Just the boat trip to there is worth the journey with all the spectaculous views of the bay, the city, the Vesuvio, to Capri,...
To safe some money, take sure not to take the high speed boats, but the slower ferries. They are much much cheaper and you can enjoy the beatiful trip for a longer time. Unfortunatelly we were in a hurry and had to take the high speed boats, but we really regreted...

If you are taking the ferry from Napoli to Palermo, Sicily and don't already have tickets make sure you go to the ticket office for your carrier (we used SNAV). We had purchased our tickets on line while still in America and were mailed the paper tickets. Arrive at boat by 5:30 PM ( 17:30) and you will be one of the first cars to enter the ferry. It's also pretty cool to get there early and watch them load the trailer trucks. Whether you have a room on the ferry or not it's important not to bring too much with you from your car. Take only the necesseties as it will be a huge pain to drag everything down the stairs in the morning (you'll arrive around 6:30-7:00 am) and you'll have to negotiate through the tights spaces between cars. We did this on the trip to Sicily and learned our lesson as it was really difficult dragging suit cases back to the car and we ended up ruining our clothes with grease in the haste and struggle. If you can bring food with you it would be a pretty good idea as the food on the boat is expensive and poor quality. Be sure to go out on the outer deck's while shoving off to enjoy the view and if you're lucky a beautiful sunset.

Ferry to Palermo - leaves around 8:00pm and arrives in Palermo around 6:30 am the following morning. Outside cabin for 2 cost 131 euro. We thought it was a wonderful way to travel. For the cost of a hotel room, we got our transportation too. We had a lovely outside cabin with comfortable twin beds and a full bathroom. The ship was large and elegant with rooms for dining, watching tv, socializing at the bar. Our daughter took the ferry alone on a previous trip only she didn't rent the cabin. She said that she was very comfortable sleeping on the couches in the lounge. However, I liked having somewhere to stow my luggage so I didn't have to watch it for the whole trip. As a caution, I read in a previous post that if you want a cabin, you should purchase a few days in advance, as they fill up quickly. For walk on passengers who don't want a room, no problem last minute purchase.
