!!THIEVES!!! If you don't stand next to it, it's going to be stolen. I mean anything. Purses, cars, wallets, you name it someone will try to steal it. Luckily their is very little violent crime so its not dangerous just a painin the ass.

Do not even think about driving here. I live in Italy and know what Italian drivers are like. These are a different species! Traffic signals mean nothing. Nothing to the drivers AND nothing to the pedestrians. I was nervous just walking.

As usual - watch your wallets and purses. Pay taxis while still inside them, not in the street, and watch for those who just seem to be innocently 'hanging around'. Don't carry what you're not prepared to lose and don't fight them!

There are two simple things you need to remember in order to avoid theft in Naples. Firstly, try to keep money and valuables out of sight. Lastly, in buses and crowded places do not keep your wallet in the back pocket of your trousers!!!

Try NOT to get killed by those crazy drivers in Napels! Remember: a car (vespa or something else that moves) is stronger than a pedestrian! Do NOT let the heat in the summer get that wisdom out of your brain! If you DRIVE something that moves: just be confident, use your horn a lot. Look scary and strong.

The local brand of mafiosi in Naples are known as Camorra. Purse snatchings, pickpocketing, theft and car break-ins are rife. Violent crime however is fairly rare. Don't carry more cash than you need.

Do not drive in Naple, you will find really an incredible traffic and some very original interpretations of driving code.Take a taxi, take a bus, you could have to wait a bit more, but I would avoid driving there.

Watch you wallet and bags at all times. We were told by a local to keep our money and hands in our pockets at all times - you feel stupit but it works!
Watch the traffic - they will run you down given half the chance.
If you get a taxi you are charged for every bag and double what is on the meter if there are two of you.

Visiting Napoli you have never wear jewlery while you are walking arround the city or on means of transport (busses, metro...train). Like in every big city I racommend you not to carry too much currency with you and be carefull specially using credit cards in 'bancomat'. Never put your pocket-money in back pockets of your trousers or in bags. Take care of cameras, telecameras. Bring your mobile absolutely not in view and try don't use it often (Roaming is really expensive everywhere you go!!! LOL). It is better to use public telephones. Don't walk at dark night in not crowd streets. Stay far both from port and from 'Piazza Garibaldi' in the evening. NEVER!! NEVER!! NEVER!! buy anything from people on the streets: mobiles, cameras, telecameras, clocks..... Usually the ask very small money for it but....they will take your money and you will never get what you have paid for. They will come near to you and they will offer to sell you such 'goods', stay far from them and don't stop to talk with them. In Napoli, usually on Corso Umberto I Str, you'll find people that play with bells or cards like in Casino. Don't stop near them, not even to look. They will offer you to take their money and to play for free, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER take their money, you will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER WIN!!!! It can seems a very criminal city but it isn't true, for sure. There are many policemen on streets, even not wearing they uniform, you can visit my city quietly. Taking few precautions, you will enjoy yourself VERY MUCH and you will count days to come back as soon as possible.

An early Baedeker guidebook to southern Italy wrote of Naples that 'the traveller is often tempted to doubt whether such a thing as honesty is known'. You wouldn't get away with such a comment in these politically correct days, but it is nevertheless perhaps still advisable to venture into Naples with a watchful eye. There is little risk of any real physical harm befalling the unwary traveller, but tourists are often the victims of pickpockets and 'scippatori', who snatch bags as they roar past on scooters and motor bikes.
