Do not take one of these sticks some person offers you when entering the area of the Vesuvio unless you are willing to pay money for it after you come back down the mountain again. I don't think they are much help.
Myself I was warned, so I don't know how much it costs.

I also liked the array of shells and mother of pearl used for the cameos which are bored to get the layes required with the tool you can see in the pic - quite amazing really to think this is how they started and gave me an appreciation of the skilled workers here.

If you go on an organised trip to Vesuvius chances are you will also be taken to a Cameo and coral factory in the hope that you will spend lots of money and they may geet some commission.
Unique Suggestions: Its at least intersesting to see how the coral is worked and the cameos made by the craftsmen.
Plus its a handy loo stop and an escape from the heat in the air conditioned showrooms.

Vesuvius is now a National Park. Although you can no longer climb part way down the crater the views from the top are incredible and worth the hike and small entrance fee at the top to actually view...
