Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii

When you are at the Pompeii ruins, you can see Vesuvius up close and personal.

Vesuvius is a National Park in Italy. View their website for more information, but for now here are two small details.
On foot: the ascent begins at the 1000m high parking lot.Follow the signs to the trail...

Going to the to edge of the crater -- 6 Euro.

Via del Vesuvio (Regio VI, XVI) (in English, Street of Mount Vesuvius) was part of the cardo maximus. As you can see from the photo, the pavement is very consumed for the passage of the wagons.

Vesuvio is the volcano that burried pompeii it is well worth the drive to see down the cone of Vesuvio that by the way is smoking in many places in the cone .And it is only a 30 min drive away from pompeii.

Visiting the major point of distruction is a mst when you go to Pompei. It is not a difficult walk, 20 min if you are fit and 35 if not so fit. It is a fairly easy walk up the mountain to the crater.
