OK, my title for this tip could be an exaggeration, but I’ve rarely had such a delicious and refreshing glass of juice as the one I got here after our visit to the ruins. There are in fact a few cafes in a row on the road that leads from the station to the entrance – we went to the one nearest the entrance because its colourful display of fruit caught our eye as soon as we left and there seemed no reason to go further.

There is no interior here; all seating is outside on a terrace area between the road and the railway line. I realise that doesn’t make it sound very attractive, but in fact it’s a pleasant place to sit as neither road nor railway is very busy and the owners have created a cheerful shaded spot here. Chris opted for a cappuccino while I was tempted by the “house speciality” – a fresh-pressed juice drink combining local oranges and lemons. This was as I’ve said, absolutely gorgeous, the added sharpness of the lemon making it more refreshing than usual orange juice but not being too much to make the drink sour. The drinks cost €3 each, which I thought was very reasonable for such a tourist spot.

We were a little short-sighted about bringing our own drinks seeing that we had to wake up real early to get here before the gates opened. This is because we were making Pompeii a day trip from Positano. Leading up to the gate at Pompeii's main entrance, there are numerous stalls and restaurants selling 4 Euro Cokes and 5 Euro Powerades.

So, if you are getting there early, like we did, then you might want to pack your own drinks. Unless you like being ripped off buying the essential liquids of life.

There is an abundance of fruit sold here as well, and it is a pretty good value. Plus, it makes the whole area smell wonderfully citrus-y!

  • Don't go, It's rubbish. We walked through and i must say that after only 3 or 4 hours of walking around the sliced water melon did look most satisfying but my mum ate there and said it was just overcooked tasteless food and was very expensive

Small restaurant, easy to find on the main road that goes to the new city of Pompei.
It's not the usual trattoria but in fact a tavola calda, a place where the locals eat. There are a few long tables and you pull up wherever you find a place.

Their menu was full of local specialties with a wide choice of fish dishes.
I ordered home-made gnocchi (don't remember what sauce) as a starter and fish (daurade) as a main course. Delicious!
After lunch we were offered a limoncello.

  • Right around Pompei there are plenty restaurants filled with bus loads of tourists walk a few short blocks into the business center of town and eat where you see the Italian locals are eating. Much better prices and quality. Italians sure know how to eat well:)

Seafood Pasta was the dish of the day.
    Wonderful fresh clams

There are a few restaurants at the site and most are set up for the big tour groups that come by bus from Rome (like we did). The food is not bad but the service was very bad and the food was just so-so as well as a little over priced.

If you can wait to eat, there are a few good local places down the road on the way out of the area that area real good and it will enable you to have a taste of the local cuisine.

  • Let's face it, you don't visit Pompei for the cuisine. Within the ruins of Pompei, there is a visitor centre where you can buy food and drinks. There are also numerous vendors outside the station, though the prices are high. I didn't get to explore the town of Pompei but I imagine there are cheaper places to eat there. We brought lunch with us (probably the best option), and ate it down near the theatre.

Many people, living in the small houses of town did not have their own oven at home, so a warm meal was only possible
for them in one of these small restaurants .

These restaurants were locked at night by wodden boards.

these small restaurants mostly offered thick soups with beans or lentils...

Warm cooked meals were stored in a masonry counter at this place. People could buy and eat the food on the spot. About 3 kg of coins, probably the takings of a single day's business, were found at this site.

Ok... You can tell by picture that this is not an actual restaurant tip... But believe it or not, this used to be a fast food restaurant! In those stone jars they used to keep the food and it was always fresh! In Archeological Museum in Naples, you can see money that was found in their cash registers...
