Right around Pompei there are plenty restaurants filled with bus loads of tourists walk a few short blocks into the business center of town and eat where you see the Italian locals are eating. Much better prices and quality. Italians sure know how to eat well:)
Favorite Dish: Seafood Pasta was the dish of the day.
Wonderful fresh clams

Let's face it, you don't visit Pompei for the cuisine. Within the ruins of Pompei, there is a visitor centre where you can buy food and drinks. There are also numerous vendors outside the station, though the prices are high. I didn't get to explore the town of Pompei but I imagine there are cheaper places to eat there. We brought lunch with us (probably the best option), and ate it down near the theatre.

Ok... You can tell by picture that this is not an actual restaurant tip... But believe it or not, this used to be a fast food restaurant! In those stone jars they used to keep the food and it was always fresh! In Archeological Museum in Naples, you can see money that was found in their cash registers...

We were a little short-sighted about bringing our own drinks seeing that we had to wake up real early to get here before the gates opened. This is because we were making Pompeii a day trip from Positano. Leading up to the gate at Pompeii's main entrance, there are numerous stalls and restaurants selling 4 Euro Cokes and 5 Euro Powerades.
So, if you are getting there early, like we did, then you might want to pack your own drinks. Unless you like being ripped off buying the essential liquids of life.
There is an abundance of fruit sold here as well, and it is a pretty good value. Plus, it makes the whole area smell wonderfully citrus-y!

Food was mostly stored in such large bowls made of pottery and dug into the ground or simply stored inside a deep
and permanentely cold cellar.
Favorite Dish: And when walking through Pompeji you may see many of them just at that place, where they were left during the eruption of
the vulcano Vesuvius.

This machine already used by the old Romans is another example of a machine, that would not look a lot different today.
Favorite Dish:
What a great idea with that spiral for the press, and what a great technique to produce it in that precision

Tubes of lead transported the water to the fountains, and at some places you still may see them inside the pavewalk-stones
Favorite Dish:
Fresh water in every restaurant is a MUST today, but of course not in Roman times.
When you click on the pic, you see the small tubes along the pavement-corner

Water was transported by large aquaducts to Pompeji, but only a few private houses had their own supply.
Favorite Dish:
Most people ,shops and restaurants/bars had to get their water from one of the many public wells to be found all over town, some of them decorated with lovely ornaments

There were about 30 bakeries in Pompeji and about 20 of them had their own mills, to be driven around by donkeys or slaves.
And mill-stones from Pompeji were well known in all parts of the roman empire
Favorite Dish:
CATO - the roman statesman - recommended to buy these stones ( made from vulcanic stones of the Vesuvius )as they are
" of great quality and modest price "

This bakery of Modestus still shows the huge mill-stones and the oven that looks almost like a bakery-oven of today.
Favorite Dish:
During the excarvations 81 loafs of bread were found inside his oven
