    blue glass vase from Pompeii

A trip to Pompeii would not be complete without a visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The best collection of frescos, mosaics and pottery from Pompeii can be found there.

For more information see my Naples Page.

The real deal is in Naples

This nice bronze of Apollo is a fake - as are virtually all of the bronzes, some of the statuary and various other items you'll see at Pompeii. To minimize the risk of deterioration or theft, many of the best artifacts have been moved to the Naples National Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli), along with others from Herculaneaum and Stabiae excavations. There are still many original objects and works of art to see - you probably won't even be able to identify the stand-ins.

Here's a link to the museum if interested in adding a visit there to your Pompeii experience.

They believed that this little creature brings good luck, so most of the homes had one of these statues in their hall. This was also found in the richest man's lobby... Cute little devil with a little tail...

    Statues, artifacts in Pompei

In the Ruins of Pompei you will see remnants of statues everywhere. These statues probably once stood on top of temples and other kinds of architecture. The original city of Pompei probably was once very beautiful with statues, sculptures, and art everywhere.

    Bronze statue

The Casa del Fauno takes its name from the bronze statue in the middle of the impluvium near the entrance. This is not the original statue - that can be seen in the Musee Nazionale Archeologico in Naples.

    Bronze statue

There are some important or symbolic statues in the Ruins of Pompei that are specially shown. This one is a bronze statue near the entrance that was of some great importance.

The Horrea is on the west side of the Civic Forum. Today it is used as a storeroom for the archaeological finds.
