From the central railway station Piazza Garibaldi of Naples you can take the local train Circumvesuviana to get to Sorrento. The train leaves every 30 minutes and it takes about one hour to the final destination of Sorrento.

The Amalfi Coast is served by blue SITA buses. There are frequent services along the breathtaking Amalfi Drive from Sorrento via Positano to either Amalfi or Salerno. The main bus station in Sorrento is located just outside the train station at Piazza G. B. De Curtis.

For YOUR own safety, DON'T drive in Sorrento if you're a foreigner. Really.
Join a day tour, hop onto a local bus or hail a cab.... but never try to be a hero (if you aren't a local or an Italian) and try to drive along the streets of Sorrento. And please, don't dash out of your hotel/hostel during rush hours too. Let the Italians go to work first and then you go out - shopping, sightseeing et al. Trust me on this.
Public transportation here is relatively inexpensive and it will not burn a hole in your pocket. Compared to New York or Tokyo!

If you're taking the BUS: If you're arriving from NAPOLI International Airport, you can hop onto one of the many shuttle buses which will bring you right to your hotel doorstep. Not exactly a steal at Euro 20 per person per transfer.
If you're hiring a private car: We chose this option (there were 3 of us) and it made more sense to split the cost of Euro 90. Plus, we get to arrive in comfort. That's exactly what you'd be paying for if you were to take a private car.
If you're DRIVING (brave soul!): Drive along the A3 Napoli-Salerno highway until you reach the Castellammare di Stabia exit and then along the SS145 road. This route will bring you right to Sorrento city center. Your whole journey should take you approx. 70 mins (depending on traffic).

Ferry leave at 9am from Sorrento bay to Capri. Takes about 1 hour to arrive at Capri Island. Cost euro7 from Sorrento, euro9.50 back from Capri.
Minibus up to the town on top called Anacapri. Expect expensive food and drink there.
Cable from Anacapri centro to the highest point costs euro5.

If you do want to drive in and around Sorrento then be ready for the derby of your life. For some reason there were no lines on the road and all of the cars and scooters were just driving on any part of the road they had wanted to. I do not remember it being like this the last time I was there but it was this time.
I am glad that we were in a bus as the rules are 4 tons beats 1 ton (4 ton bus beats 1 ton car)

An excellent base for exploring.....

I'll be honest..........I didn't deliberately choose to visit Sorrento for itself. The first trip in 2008 was to see Pompeii, and Herculaneum, and Oplontis. I didn't fancy staying in Naples, so...
