Chiesa di Maria del Carmine from Piazza Tasso
    1 more image

The Piazza Tasso acts as a sort of informal gateway to the old town of Sorrento. As you enter from the Corso Italia which leads here from the station, you leave behind the modern shops and are surrounded by a wealth of beautiful buildings, many in the Italian variant of Art Nouveau known as Stil Liberty. The square is a buzz of activity, with constant traffic and people weaving among it, cafés lively with conversation, street artists, tourist groups and carriages drawn by plumed horses. In the centre of it all stands the marble statue of Torquato Tasso, after whom the square is named, created by sculptor Giovanni Carli in 1870. The great poet was born in Sorrento in 1544 and died in Rome in 1595, just before he was to be crowned poet laureate.

At the north eastern side of the square is the Chiesa di Maria del Carmine, with a wonderful Rococo facade of gleaming white-and-yellow stucco. It looked particularly lovely in the late afternoon light, as we walked back through the square on our way to the station.

It is in this square that you can catch the little tourist train which will take you to the Marina Grande (and other sights) if you’re not able to manage the steep streets. But if you’re up for a short walk, let me lead you down to the sea at the Marina Grande through some of the other pretty squares of Sorrento …

Piazza Tasso is the picturesque, main square of Sorrento. Lined with restaurants and shops, it often served as my starting point for an evening in Sorrento, whether it involved exploring the Sorrento streets or wandering down to Marina Grande...

Take a trip on the white 'Train'

In Piazza Tasso you can wait for and get on a White 'train' which takes you on a tour around Sorrento town. The price is 6 Euro and you recive ear phones (in a sealed packet) which you plug into the socket for your prefered language and you will recive a full commentary during you tour. It's great for people who are not good at walking or if you have small children.

The train stops in Piazza Tasso tickets can be purchased from the stand were the train stops (next to the gorge)

    Walls of the gorge

Sorrento is built on top of magnificent cliffs and a deep gorge runs through the town center or Piazza Tasso. The walls built along the gorge to support the structure above it look pretty intimidating!

Be warned : climbing up the stairs by the wall is really tiring so wear comfortable shoes or use the bus!!

Crack in the Middle of Sorrento
    1 more image

In Piazza Tasso, walk over to the flags and look down! You will see the giant crack that once separated the two sides of the city and the roads that wind down to the harbour below. Access to beach level is by public bus, private shuttle or stairway.

    Piazza Tasso

The heart of Sorrento, this bustling piazza is home to restaurants, bars, horse-drawn carriage rides, great views, tourists, locals, and more! Sit at Fauno Bar for a good, cheap aperitivo and lots of people watching, or enjoy an award-winning pizza at Pizzeria Aurora (see my Restaurant tips). From the piazza, busses connect you to the Cape and the marinas, and it is a brief walk to the Circumvesuviana stop.

The very centre of Sorrento is no doubt Piazza Tasso. Be it day or night, there's always something to see on Piazza Tasso. This is the centre of local cultural traditions like carnival, Easter processions, and summer and autumn festivals with typical products.
On this square you will find the Chiesa del Carmine and the Palazzo Correale.

    Piazza Tasso

This is the main square in Sorrento, buses leave from here to Rome twice a day, its a busy square as its the hub of the town and cars seem to come out of nowhere here!

There are a few cafes and bars on the square where you can chill out and enjoy a drink....the downside being so noisy from the traffic!
