Capri

by sim1

The first of my excursions was to Capri. The isle of Capri is not far out of the coast close to Napoli. I stayed at a camping just outside Sorrento and they organized daytrips to the island of Capri. The trip sounded great to me. Not only did a small boat bring you to the island, but it also toured around it, so I could enjoy the beautiful coastline as well. There are many places from where you can take a boat to Capri, like in Napels and Sorrento itself. But for me this was the perfect solution and I enjoyed the trip a lot.

Going to Capri

The trip with the boat to the island was a highlight of my trip to Capri. The sun shining so brightly and the wind blowing in my face, it couldn't be more perfect. There were several people on the boat, but it wasn't overcrowded. Early in the morning you had to gather on the beach to hop on the boat. The guide on the boat was very good explaining everything we saw on the way. All in all it was such a relaxing day, I really enjoyed it!

A grotto at Capri

by sim1

This was one of the grotto's that we saw on the coastline of Capri. It is not the famous 'Blue Grotto' though. Unfortunately it is not always possible to visit this grotto. Sometimes the sea is to rough, and the opening to the grotto is not large enough to enter. I was out of luck when I visited Capri, but I am told that it is something you shouldn't miss.

Faro Anacapri Punta Carena, Capri

This picture of the lighthouse is taken from the boat. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go to the lighthouse itself on the island, but it is easy enough to do. It only takes 10 minutes by bus to get to the extreme western end of the island, called "Limmo", from the Latin Limen = boundary. The headland is called "Karena", from the Greek word, which means "headland-cape". On this headland, a hundred years ago, was built the "Lighthouse" which is considered the second most powerful one in Italy, after Genova.

This is also the departure or arrival point of a very enjoyable walk along the north-western coast of the island, known as "The Walk of the Fortifications" because it passes through the ruins of the fortifications built by the French in1808 and which have been recently restored. I guess I have to go back here to see all this. But this time I will make sure not to go on such a busy time of the year. The busses were packed with people, and there was a long line-up to get into the bus. There wasn't enough time to take the bus, get to the lighthouse, hike and get back on time to the boat.

Marina Piccola, Capri

by sim1

Capri has several harbours, but we were dropped off at the Marina Piccola on the south side of the island. Marina Piccola is a small little harbour, not that much to do, besides seeing these colourful boats in the harbour. When you arrive at Marina Piccola you can take the bus up the hill to town of Capri or and from there to anywhere else you would like.

Map of the island of Capri

by sim1

In the city centre you can find this mozaic with the map of the island of Capri. It's quite huge and I had a look at it from a lookout point just above the mozaic. Hahaha, quite handy as I forgot to bring a map with me :-) But I solved that problem soon in buying a map in one of the many stores.

Walking around in Capri

by sim1

The bus took me up to Capri, the main town of the island. The centre of Capri is Piazza Umberto. It is a small, closed-off square resembling a courtyard. At the square you can see the ''Torre dell'Orologio''(Clock Tower) which was probably the belltower of the old cathedral. Also on the square are the municipal offices (located in the former bishop's residence) and a series of stores and cafes. To the left is the San Stefano church. Around the Piazza Umberto is the medieval quarter. This is a nice area to stroll around with small winding streets and alleys. It sounds all nice, but the only problem I had with it that it was too busy. I visited in August, probably the most busy time of year for Capri, and I have to admit that this was not a very clever time of me to go here. I had to fight through the crowds at times to see something of the town of Capri, and that took away a lot of its...

A beautiful hike back to the harbour, Capri

by sim1

As I didn't like the crowds that much, I decided to try and find some more quieter places. And I succeeded in that! From the Capri town there goes a hiking trail all the way down to the harbour of Marina Piccola. It's a very nice trail to do, not far, but with beautiful views over the coastline of Capri. In the picture you can see the winding hiking trail going back to Marina Piccola.

Taking a swim, Capri

by sim1

If you get back to Marina Piccola and you have to wait for you boat a nice thing to do is take a swim in the little harbour or just sit in the sun on the beach. Both the beach and the swimming area are very small, so don't get your hopes up too high.
