Cappadocia Things to Do

The caves are not far from Cappadocia, close to the village of Petrella Liri. These natural caves are rich of stalactites and stalagmites and impressive to see, at least for me, because I had not visited any other caves before. In prehistoric times, in the Bronze Age, these caves were inhabited, so there is an archeological site within them.
There are guided visits every hour, in Italian. The entrance fee is 5 euro for adults and 3.5 for children. In summer (starting mid-June) they are open every day from 10.00 to 18.00.

The Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity is about 15 km away from the village of Cappadocia. To get there you must first go to Camporotondo, where the road to the sanctuary starts. It is a road without asphalt, inside the Regional Park of Mont Simbruini, a beautiful landscape of beech woods and rocks.
The sanctuary is carved inside the mountain, with a neoclassical façade inserted in a high rock wall called Tagliata.

it is an anomaly to see various mushroom houses and various images in the volcanic rock that housed softer sand beneath the harder surface and the weather is quite warm even in February! the views along the riverbanks are superb as you see where the ascetic religious went into caves they shovels out of the sides of the canyon...a bit like the Chaco Canyon or Mayans. Better to buy a two day sightseeing package in Urguyp or Istanbul because it is an area vast and it takes time to find all the various sights and they are not well marked.

A must see, but you can also preview it in a movie made by Passacalia starring Maria Callas in the Greek tragedy. forgot the name of the movie, but do a movie search.....

I wrote "Once upon a time" as a title because this is the translation of the restaurant's name. It is a small and cozy lace where you can have a very good dinner of home-made pasta and charcoal-grilled meat.
The wine list includes also wines from other parts of Italy and from abroad.
