I have now visited Bologna three times. The first time we arrived by train. The station is centrally located, and is only a short bus ride from the main square, Piazza Maggiore. There is more information on train travel in the next tip. The second time we flew into Bologna from London. We flew with British Airways, and the flight arrived at Bologna's main airport called Marconi International Airport. Marconi is located only 6km northwest of the city centre. To get into town from the airport you can catch the Bologna Aerobus, which departs every 15 minutes, and the journey takes about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can catch a taxi (which is what we did - didn't want to waste a minute of sight seeing time!). There is a large taxi rank at the front of the airport and a trip into the centre of town costs around 12-15 euro. There is also a smaller airport called Forli, which is around an hours drive from Bologna. Some of the budget airlines (eg. Ryanair) fly into here. One our third visit to Bologna we drove in, and dropped off our hire car. Bologna is a pretty big place and some of the signposting off the motorway is confusing. We ended up exiting too early and having a scenic drive through the outskirts of Bologna, having no idea where we were. Somehow, either by fluke, or due to my superior 'navigation skills' we managed to find the car rental place with only one small argument ; ) Leave a Comment

Although Bologna has its own airport, Forlì (sometimes also called Bologna-Forlì) may be considered as a cheaper alternative. Ryanair uses Bologna/Forlì airport for flights to London/Stansted and Frankfurt/Hahn and will commence services to Girona/Barcelona in spring of 2007. Also, Belle Air from Albania and Windjet (Sicily as well as a some occassionally served european destinations) use this airport. There is a bus running several times a day from Forlì airport to Bologna's coach station which will take you 10 Euros. However, there's a cheaper alternative: Use the local bus from Forlì airport (station is close to the departure hall). The trip to the city center will costs you only 80 cents. The bus (line 2) will leave you at Piazzale della Vittoria, which is within walking distance (500 m) of the train station. A train ticket to Bologna can be bought at the vending machines for just 3,80. Anyway, if you want to use the 10EUR bus (which is the more comfortable way), check the webpage below for the timetable. by telsoar Buses were great, get the multi day pass. We took the bus to the train station and the trains with one exception ran on time and were very inexpensive. When you get to the small daytrip towns by train, just walk into town as it is NEVER very far to the main square. This is a picture of a mural in Faenza, the ceramic heart of Italy. Theme: Airplane

Bologna's airport is located in the north of the city. There is a frequent bus connection that passes through downtown and finishes at the train station (it really doesn't finish there because it's a loop). There are connection serving Europe's main airports - Frankfurt, Paris, London, Lisbon, Barcelona, et cetera. Leave a Comment

hmmm...which city are we heading to today!? by sue_stone I have now been to Italy several times and have travelled around this fabulous country by train most of the time. Once you get the hang of it, train travel in Italy is easy. It is also a great way to see the beautiful countryside on the way to your next destination. I have travelled a couple of times using a rail pass, but the last couple of visits have just purchased tickets for each individual trip as we went. That said, we often have purchased tickets a day or two in advance - particularly if the particular train requires a seat reservation, or if it is a busy time of year. Purchasing a little in advance also means that you don't miss the train you want to catch due to a huuuuuge queue for tickets.... You could try buying your tickets from the automatic ticket machines at the stations - we have found them quick and easy to use. Also, I have travelled both first and second class, and didn't really find much difference - travel second class and you can use the extra money to buy more wine/food etc Just remember with all tickets that you need to validate them in the small yellow ticket machines before you board your train. The Stadio Dall’Ara is situated quite long distance away from the city-center. If you come by train to Bologna, there is a bus that goes from the centralstation, close to the stadium. When you get out from the station, go directly to the left, and at the stop at the flank of the square you’ll find the bus. Make sure to take the right bus, by asking the driver. A simple “stadio?” is normally enough. After the game it’s the same procedure, when you are outside Curva Costa, take right as soon as you reach another street, and there you’ll see 20-30 orange buses. At least half of them goes back to the station, and if you’re in a hurry, make sure to take the first bus in the line. It’s also quite simple to go there by foot, but it will take you at least an hour. By car? Just follow the “stadio”-signs when you get into the city. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus
