Palazzo dei Banchi sul Piazza Maggiore by croisbeauty, 1 more photos Palazzo dei Banchi used to belong to powerful 15th and 16th centuries bankers. Nowadays it houses the most elegant shops in its porticoe. The construction of the building first started in 1412, but finished only in 1568 by architect Jacopo Barozzi. Barozzi, called Il Vignola, built the facade of the palace and the portico which is part of so-called "Portico del Pavaglione". Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Maggiore

Palazzo del Podestà by Gillianina The oldest parts of this building date back to 1200. In the Middle Age the “Podestà” lived there. He was the most important authority of the city administration. Under the vault, on which the tower stands on, a stange phenomenom happens: if you approach one of the pillars in the corner and you whisper, another person can hear your voice very clearly standing near the pillar in the opposite corner! According to local lore, those who climb Torre degli Asinelli will not make it through college - but ignore this superstitious warning since this only refers to Bolognese students. If you're a tourist, the exhausting climb over the tower's 498 steps (no lifts here, unlike in Venice's Campanile) is well worth it. Waiting for you are grand views of the city - a treat for the shutter-happy tourist. Torre degli Asinelli, built between 1109-1119 by the Asinelli family - is the taller of the two towers that are unmistakably Bologna's main landmarks. The towers are said to be the remaining survivors of some 12 towers that used to dot the city. The shorter tower, Torre Garisenda, is closed to the public as it leans precariously on a 3.2-meter tilt. More pictures from the tower on this travelogue. Leave a Comment

Palazzo Baciocchi by croisbeauty Palazzo di Giustizia, also known as Palazzo Baciocchi, was designed and constructed by Andrea Palladio in 1534. The palace was sold in 1822 to Napoleon's brother in law, Prince Felice Baciocchi. This monumental palace, as most of Palladio's works, has beautiful courtyard and the great staircase inside the building. Today it houses the Justice Courts. Leave a Comment Address: Via Togavlie

The Anatomy Theatre is absolutely amazing. Built in 1637 by Antonio Levante on the upper floor of the palace, the theatre is built entirely out of wood. This is where anatomy lessons were held, analysing and dissecting a body on the marble table in the middle of the room. The room features the famous statues of the Spellati - Skinless - by Ercole Lelli. Open: Mon. to Sat. 9.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. (Mon. to Fri. afternoon opening from 1.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. not always guaranteed) SUMMER 2005: From August 1st to 27th Mon. to Sat. 9.00 a.m. - 1.45 p.m. Closed Sun. and holidays. A story of life. by iandsmith I found this very moving. On the facade of the free multi media public library there are pictures. Lots of pictures. They are of the war dead. The poignancy of the fact that a new generation passes by, all day every day, didn't escape me. Bob Dylan's words, "When will they every learn?" never seemed more apt. I hope, for the world's sake, they will. Someone walked over, apparently deliberately searching for someone's face. I hoped it brought them some comfort. Sala Borsa, I won't forget it in a hurry. The construction of this impressive building was carried out over many years by joining together many different buildings into one larger one. The largest part of the Palazzo Comunale is the Palazzo d'Accursio, topped with a clock tower. Three important works of art are on the façade of the palace: the Madonna di Piazza by Nicolò dell'Arca, the statue of Pope Gregory XIII and an eagle attributed to Michelagelo. The second floor of the Palazzo d'Accursio contains both the Collezione Comunale d'Arte and the Museo Morandi, which hold pieces of art and furniture from the 1400s to the 1800s The palace is open to the public where visitors can see the council chamber, halls and an art collection Address: Piazza Maggiore

by Willettsworld This building was made up of many different public offices that, during the centuries, where assembled and bought together by the Municipality at the end of the 13th century. At the beginning, it was the seat of some municipal offices. Then, in 1336, it became the residence of the Anziani, the highest magistracy in the city and the seat of the city government as well. The building was enlarged in the first half of the 15th century and then the clock in the Accursio tower was added. The façade, where there is the Madonna with Child by Niccolò dell'Arca, a portal by Galeazzo Alessi was added in the mid 16th century and in 1580 the big bronze statue of Pope Gregory XIII was added on top of it. The palace is open to the public where visitors can see the council chamber, halls and an art collection. Open: Tues-Sun 10am-6pm Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Maggiore

One of my favorite places is the old stock exchange, or Sala Borsa (in which "old" means originally established in the 14th century). It sat empty and unused for decades, but then a few years ago it was turned into a library. The main hall. Can you see the plexiglas tiles in the floor? We tried to take pictures, but it was impossible. Anyway, underneath this structure is an archeological dig that has unearthed pieces of the original Roman road, a few dwellings, etc., and the floor is transparent so you can see it all. The library has several cafe?s inside. A beautyful light inside, and residues of old walls. Leave a Comment Address: Next to Piazza Maggiore

The famous wood and brick portico of Isolani Palace in Via Maggiore, claimed to be one of the first ever built in town. This splendid and suggestive house, one of few of a kind left in Bologna, was built in 1250. There is long covered portico inside the building with number of interesting shops. The whole building is huge and its rear part overlooking Piazza San Stefano. Leave a Comment Address: Via Maggiore
