Basilica di San Francesco, founded by a great monastic order the Franciscans (the Gery Friars) is fine example of the 13th century Gothic architecture. The Saint have visited Bologna and the local were moved by his speeches of peace and faith, decided to build the church to honour him. The majestic building is a three aisles church and holds nine chapels. It was completely destroyed during the WW II and restored thanks to the hard work of architect Alfredo Barbacci. Worth of attentions are three tombs of the famous "Glossatori", Accursio, Odofredo and Rolandino, which are kept in the church's garden. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Malpighi

The church of Santa Maria della Vita was designed in 1289 as a hospital to care for disabled people. In 1687 the building was turned into the church and the copper dome, designed by Giuseppe Tubertini, was added in 1787. The sculptures on the front facade are work of Nicolo dell'Arca. Basilica di San Domenico, called also Santa Maria delle Vigne, was founded in the 13th century by the monastic order Black Friars (Dominicans). After St. Dominic's death, in 1221, the old church underwent several restorations, the building was enlarged and new chapels had been added. The church was finally restored by Bolognese architect, Carlo Francesco Dotti, in 1728. The church kept some valuable paintings by Nicolo Pisano, Lodovico Caracci, Guido Reni, while St. Petronius and St. Proloco statues were carved by Michelangelo. In front of the church two huge pillars depicting St. Dominic and Madonna del Rosario stand in the square, and in between them is placed Rolandino de Passeggieri's tomb. San Peter Church by Gillianina It was built starting from an original nucleus in Romanesque Style. It is now the seat of the Bishop´s Throne of Bologna. The bell tower is of particular importance; it dates back to the 12th century and was built by Mastro Alberto. In 1426 the old wood dome was replaced by one of bricks with a leaden facing. The central nave and the side chapels are pianted by the greatest bolognaise artists, such as Ludovico Carracci, Prospero Fontana and Donato Creti. Leave a Comment Directions: Indipendenza Street

by Gillianina The sanctuary is located on one of the hills sorrounding Bologna and is linked to one of the city's ancient gates (the Meloncello) through a long portico (San Luca's portico). Built between 1674 and 1739, 3 km long, it includes 666 arches. In San Luca the most important thing is the painting of the Virgin Mary, object of the devotion by the bolognaise. This Basilica is like a symbol of Bologna for me, because you see it from very far, and when you have been away for a while and you are going back, you spot the hill with the church from the train or car, and you realize that you are nearly home ;) A sweet feeling :) Leave a Comment

Not many people know that San Pietro is the cathedral of the city of Bologna instead of the church of Saint Petronius. The building dates back to the 10th century when it was built in 910, but it was rebuilt after a fire in 1141. Between the 12th and the 13th centuries, the majestic bell tower was erected and a highly decorated marble prothyrum was added on the side, with a central rose window. The cathedral was appointed as the "Metropolitan" by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Inside, there are important works: the Annunciation, by Lodovico Carracci, in the high altar, the frescoes on the vault of the presbytery and the apse, a wooden Crucifixion of the 12th century and the Mourned Dead Christ, a group of terracotta sculptures by Alfonso Lombardi, dating back to the 16th century. San Domenico is perhaps the most evocative church I've visited in my travels. This has a lot to do with the sole purpose of the church - to house the remains of St Dominic who died here in 1221; and the way this purpose was executed through the Arca di San Domenico, the tomb where the saint's remains are interred. The tomb is a composite masterpiece of some of Italy's best artists: Nicola Pisano for the statues that adorn the tomb, as well as reliefs depicting the life of the saint, Nicola di Bari for the dramatic canopy, and figures of the angels and Sts Procolus and Petronius by the young Michelangelo. Inside the Basilica there are priceless works of art like Saint Thomas by Guercino, the Nativity by Luca Cambiaso, the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine by Filippino Lippi, Saint Raymond by Lodovico Carracci and the Crucifix by Giunta Pisano. Also very interesting is the chapel of Saint Dominic with sculptures by Nicolò Pisano, Alfonso Lombardi and G.B. Boulard, whilst Michelangelo made the statues of Saint Petronio and Saint Procolo. Basilica of San Francesco by Gillianina The gothic basilica of San Francesco was built between 1236 and 1263. The interiors are really worth visiting, as it's one of the most beautiful churches of the city. Particularly important is the marmor altar-piece. Around the church are the graves of the “Glossatori”, who were jurists (so called from the literary form in which they wrote their texts).
