the towers by Aggeliki The Two Towers are among the city's most recognisable landmarks. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the noble families of Bologna raised over 100 towers across the city. Of the 20 that survive today, the Asinelli and the Garisenda towers are Bologna's most famous and they situated at the end of Via Rizzoli. Leave a Comment

Le due torri stand just in the middle of Bologna. These medioeval towers look really great! The bigger one is named "Asinelli", while the smallest one is called "Garisenda". You can climb the Asinelli one, the ticket costs 3 € and the view from above is really stunning: from there you can see real "Bologna La Rossa", which means "reddish" Bologna, reddish because of the red roofs covering all the buildings.

Asinelli and Garisenda towers by Mundus Italy has, without any question, a troubled relationship with towers. During during the Middle Ages, Bologna's weathly families used to compete with eachother on the size of their towers. At the apex of that mania there were about two hundred towers, about ten are left today. The Asinelli and Garisenda towers are the most famous ones. The Garisenda is waaaayyyy to inclided for my comfort... Leave a Comment Address: At the end of Via Rizzoli

On via Rizzoli towards Torre delgi Asinelli by MarvintheMartian Just in case you are keeping count this is the fourth of the big towers in Italy (after Cremona, Siena and Venice). The tower is 97 metres tall and has fantastic views of the city (see the photo on the introduction page). Entrance fee is about €3. Leave a Comment Address: piazza Porta RavegnanaDirections: Considering that seven streets converge to this piazza then you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it - I would say just look up, but all you'll see is the roof of a portico!

by prleprle In middle ages Bologna has several dozens of family towers. The most important families had the tallest ones. Several of that towers survive all that centuries. This 2 in background of picture are also symbols of Bologna (Due Torri). Tallest one is Assinelli Tower (1109-1119), 97.2 meters high and open for public. Other one is Garisenda Tower and it's 47 meters high. On the back of towers are Basilica di S.Bartolomeo from XVI century interesting for paintings of Ludovico Carraci and Guido Reni. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza di Porta RavegnanaDirections: Old Town centre, crossroad of several most important streets in Old Town

by Willettsworld Torri Asinelli is one of the famous Torre Pendenti, or leaning towers of Bologna. Torri Asinelli and its shorter leaning neighbour Torre Garisenda are among the few survivors of the original 200 that once formed the skyline of Bologna. Both were begun in the 12th century and really were just status symbols: The more powerful the family was, the taller its tower was. At 97m (318 ft) tall, it is the fourth highest tower in Italy after those in Cremona, Siena and Venice. Its 500 step ascent offers amazing views over the city and to the hills beyond. I didn't climb it as I chickened out! Open: Summer daily 9am-6pm (to 5pm off season). Admission: € 3,00. Leave a Comment

Garisenda Tower by Polly74 Noteworthy for its conspicuous inclination, it was originally 60 meters tall. In 1351 it was shortened, however, for fear that its alarming tilt, already pronounced at the time, could cause it to collapse Leave a Comment Address: Piazza di Porta RavegnanaDirections: Next to Torre degli Asinelli

The Asinelli (98 meters) and Garisenda (48 meters) towers, are believed to be the emblems of the Bologna. Both towers were built in the 12th century as a result of the competition between two Golognece families. The leaning one and much shorter is the Garisenda Tower, not solidly supported and for fear of the tower collapsing people decided to reduce its length from 61 meters to a little more than 48 meters. As a concequence, family Asinelli won the competition Leave a Comment Address: Via San Vitale

Torri degli Asinelli e Garisenda by orlandom These Tower’s are 2 of the 200 that once formed the skyline of Bologna. Both were begun in the 12th century. Torre Garisenda was shortened as a safety measure within only a few years of it's construction and still leans 3 m (10 feet) from center. And torri degli Asinelli has not been changed. by Willettsworld Torre Garisenda was shortened as a safety measure within only a few years of its construction in 1360. Compared to its taller neighbour, Torre Asinelli, the tower is only 49m (162 ft.) tall, but because the Garisendas didn't prepare a solid foundation, it sways tipsily to the south, about 3m (11 ft.) from perpendicular.
