Although Bologna has its own airport, Forlì (sometimes also called Bologna-Forlì) may be considered as a cheaper alternative. Ryanair uses Bologna/Forlì airport for flights to London/Stansted and Frankfurt/Hahn and will commence services to Girona/Barcelona in spring of 2007. Also, Belle Air from Albania and Windjet (Sicily as well as a some occassionally served european destinations) use this airport.
There is a bus running several times a day from Forlì airport to Bologna's coach station which will take you 10 Euros. However, there's a cheaper alternative: Use the local bus from Forlì airport (station is close to the departure hall). The trip to the city center will costs you only 80 cents. The bus (line 2) will leave you at Piazzale della Vittoria, which is within walking distance (500 m) of the train station. A train ticket to Bologna can be bought at the vending machines for just 3,80.
Anyway, if you want to use the 10EUR bus (which is the more comfortable way), check the webpage below for the timetable.
In October 2008 we flew into Forli airport on a Ryanair flight from London. There are two ways to get to Bolgna, local bus to Forli train station or the Terravision coach which is direct. The bus can be found immediatly outside the airport arrival area and if your not pre-booked the Terravision coach is just inside the departure area. The coach leaves Forli about half-hour after every flight arrives and returns from Bologna coach station (gate 15) approx 3.5 hours before flight leave. Now that Ryanair have announced they are moving flights to Bologna airport it appears this service will stop soon (Oct 08).
The airport has all the usual one terminal facilities. Some shops (food and goods) and of course very few seats for passengers to sit on at the passenger gate.
Journey time is about 85 minutes and a return is 21 Euros. Driver speaks English.
There is a service interruption from 26/10/08, check web for details. Bus and train services are as normal.
Bologna is reacheable by plane. It has an important international airport with direct links to the most important european cities, such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona or Frankfurt, as well with New York. From the airport there's the AEROBUS (a special bus service that takes u directly to the city centre, or you can get a taxy...it's not more than 15 minutes)- Or you can get there by train: the railway station is among the most important in Italy and close to the city centre (10-15 minutes on foot).
Buses were great, get the multi day pass. We took the bus to the train station and the trains with one exception ran on time and were very inexpensive. When you get to the small daytrip towns by train, just walk into town as it is NEVER very far to the main square. This is a picture of a mural in Faenza, the ceramic heart of Italy.
It is very easy to find the shuttle bus at Marconi airport. It is called BLQ, or Aerobus You could buy a ticket from the driver for 6 euro and within 30 mins you will arrive at Bologna central railway station.

Bologna's airport is located in the north of the city.
There is a frequent bus connection that passes through downtown and finishes at the train station (it really doesn't finish there because it's a loop).
There are connection serving Europe's main airports - Frankfurt, Paris, London, Lisbon, Barcelona, et cetera.
From London Stansted Eazyjet fly direct to Bologna airport and Ryanair go to Forli which is a €10 bus ride into town. Neither will break the bank
