If you find yourself in need of a sweet treat whilst exploring Modena then you may well find yourself at Forno San Giorgio.
This tempting pasticceria has been satisfying the locals since 1902, and is a great place to stop off for a snack and a coffee.
Favorite Dish: We were tempted in on our first visit to Modena and drooled over the large selection of cakes and pastries. They also sell savoury snacks for those not after a sugar hit.
To be honest I can't remember exactly what we ate, but I do recall happy memories from this place....no doubt it was something evil!

On our night in Modena we had dinner at Ristorante Belvedere Da Danilo. The restaurant is located on a cobbled street, just north of Piazza Mazzini. There is a small covered terrace area along the street, and a decent size restaurant inside.
The evening we dined we didn't have a reservation and really wanted to sit outside as it was such a lovely evening. There was one little vacant table with a reserved sign on it, but when we enquired they whipped the sign of and gave us the table.
Service was quite friendly and slightly more efficient than the usual Italian style.
Favorite Dish: To start, we ordered the Antipasto della casa, which consisted of some meats and cheese served with some strange, but very tasty, cheesy puff things. We ordered a yummy bottle of Rosso di Montalcino to drink.
Main course for me was the Tagliatelline con Cinghiale (pasta with Wildboar sauce) and Alex had the Veal with mushrooms, ham and asparagus. Both were quite tasty. Dessert was Tiramisu for Alex….and a couple of spoonfuls for me.
The bill came to 63 euro.

I think this might be some kind Italian of Ice Cream chain of restaurants. It was situated on the main drag going out of Modena an american diner sort of affair. Stunning choice of Ice Cream I had 3 different types in a currant bun. Sick I know but well tasty. Pistaccio. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Favorite Dish: Err Ice Cream

IN THE CENTER OF OLD TOWN, A 20-SEAT RESTAURANT IN A RESTORED ANTIQUE BUILDING. VERY ROMANTIC, EXCELLENT CHOICE OF WINES RIGHT FROM THE UNDERGROUND CELLAR, "TRADITIONAL" AND " CREATIVE" CUISINE.
Favorite Dish: ALL ENTREES AND PASTA ARE GORGEOUS

'Valle', in localita' omonima.
Favorite Dish: I primi piatti, tutti.

The price is affordable (20 euro per person) and the atmosphere is familiar and relaxed. No elegant dresses are required.
Noisy as all the italian restaurants!!
Favorite Dish: Gnocco fritto and Tigelle (typical Modena's menu), with cheese, lard, parmesan...
add Pinzimonio (mixed vegetables) with balsamic vinegar, salt and olive oil
Also try 'Pennette al barolo' (Pasta with a special Barolo wine sauce) and 'Pappardelle al cinghiale' (long pasta stripes with wild-pork sauce)

Price: around 25 Euros, depending on wine.
They have a wonderfull selection of italian wines and they can suggest a good one.
The atmosphere is very relaxed, in pure country style.
Favorite Dish: 'Lardo di colonnata con pane ai cereali caldo' (Colonnata Lard served with warm cereal bread)
'Spaghetti al torchio con guanciale' (hand made spaghetti with onions and bacon)(you'll better have none to kiss that evening!!)
'Filetto di manzo all'aceto balsamico' (beef filet with a special balsamic vinegar sauce)(cow better than pork... but you have to like vinegar a lot to fully appreciate this special dish)
'Fragole con zabaione al vino passito' (Strawberries with egg and Passito wine sauce)

Pizzeria da Italo. The first restaurant I could find around the main square, and finding it was not so easy! The question pops by itself: How could Pavarotti get so fat (or alternatively: can I have the address of his mamma? ;-))
I hope Andrea won't be mad at me for not trying anything Emilian while in Emilia Romagna, but my stomach was loud, my pocket rather shallow and my knowledge of regional food not good enough, so I settled for the old tested thing (well, at least it's Italian!). Anyway, Da Italo is a warm place looking like a typical trattoria and serving dishes other than pizza too.
Favorite Dish: Well... pizza! (a good one, may I add)
