The market place by Henrik_rrb Not very sure if this local market is there all the time, or if we just were lucky enough to be there on the right day. Inside the walls of the palace, anyway, was quite huge market, where they only sold local products, like wine, ham and cheese. A magical moment for me to buy and bring home all the famous things from Parma. The salesmen were incredible friendly, and gave us as much information as they could, mostly in italian, but to Frida's relief, also some in english. The dangerous part were all the wine and liquer they sold, as at every stand we stopped (and they were a few...) the salesmen "forced" us to try just their special drink. It was perfect, since I then could try, and try again, and then try again, until I found a wine that I really liked. It was less perfect that both me and Frida after a while got quite tipsy of all the different wines, grappa and other drinks we had got... :) I finished with my stomach full, my head spinning, and my arms full of different things I had bought! And I could have stayed forever, if it wasn't for the fact that I knew that if I took one more sip of a glass of red wine, or even worse, grappa, I would be wasted... :) Bought two bottles of red wine from Piacenza, 1,5 kilo of parmegiani cheese, while Frida took two bottles of wine, one bottle of ecological liquer and only a smaller bit of cheese. If this market is a thing that is there all the time I definately advise you to go there! Leave a Comment Address: Parco della PaceDirections: In the park, inside the walls, you'll find the market. Full of yellow-green flags, so if it's still there you can't miss it.

Piazza del Duomo is the artistic jewel of Parma, since it includes the city's greatest monuments, namely the Duomo and the Battistero ("Baptistry"), as well as the Palazzo del Vescovado ("Bishop's Palace"). Due to this concentration of medieval architecture, the local and national administrations are pushing for the square to be included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. Leave a Comment

Teatro Regio by Mikebond Teatro Regio ("Royal theatre", the yellow building in the middle of the picture) lies in Strada Garibaldi, a nice street for pedestrians and bicycles, as you see here. The theatre was built in Neoclassic style between 1821 and 1829 on a plan by Nicola Bettoli according to the wish of Duchess Maria Luigia (Wien 1791 - Parma 1847), Emperor Franz I's daughter. It was inaugurated on 16th May 1829 with a piece Vincenzo Bellini composed to celebrate the event. Today, it is one of the most famous Italian lyrical theatres. I didn't visit the inside, so I haven't got any picture, but it is very beautiful. Leave a Comment Address: strada Garibaldi

Somehow I think that this park is among the nicest I have seen in Italy. If there would be a ranking, it would be number 2 after Bologna’s. The “Parco Ducale” or “Giardino Publico” was once a private garden of the dukes of Parma, but is now open to the public. The castle is still a part of the park. In the park, you will find a couple of nice little things, like statues a fountain or a little island. Not very different from other parks in the world, but as I said – somehow, I liked this one more than others. Leave a Comment Directions: To the east of the old town, across the Torrente

The inside of the cathedral is imposing. It is full with all sorts of decorations: paintings, sculptures, frescoes. You will be astonished to see them in a Romanesque church and you would be right. The interior is not romanesque at all, but manneristic (mannerism is the artistic style between Gothic and baroque). I will not write here all the masterpieces you can admire in the church. These pictures show the nave, the frescoes on the arcades, near the high altar and on the domes. Sorry for their bad quality. Leave a Comment

San Giovanni Evangelista by Henrik_rrb Almost hidden behind Il Duomo you'll find the small church called San Giovanni Evangelista. Built in the 1100 century, but not completed with the amazing painting, specially the cupol, until 1613. Inside the building there is also a wellknown library with old books, and according to what I understood full with more than 20 000 books. Some of them as old as 15-1600 years. Would take a while to read through that I'm afraid. Not sure how good my knowledges in italian would stand against that...? :) The church is open 09-12 and 15-18 every day, and there is also the possibility to go a guided tour, although you have to make a prenotation to get that. Entrance is free, as it should be in a church. Not sure about the guided tour and eventual cost for that though. Of course, with my luck and sense for good planning, we didn't come here until after the Parma-Inter game, at around 23... So, no entry for me this time. But the church looked fantastic with the lightings on it and somehow looked even better in the night than during the day, when we just saw it from far away. The tower, behind the church, is very tall. Say no more... One of this towers that is impossible to get the whole part on one photo. ;) Leave a Comment Address: P.le San GiovanniDirections: Just behind the cathedral, Il Duomo. You'll, if nothing else, see the big tower just behind it.Website: www.parmasangiovanni.com

Stadio Tardini was built in 1923, and is named after the projectleader and politician Ennio Tardini. There are space for 28 783 spectators and it’s rarely sold out. The only times when you might have problems to find tickets is for games against Milan or Juventus. The tickets for Parma-games are quite expensive, at least for the big games. When I was there for Milan-Parma 03/04 I paid more than 70 euro for a ticket… Leave a Comment Directions: See under "Transportations"

Here are the real wonders of the baptistry: its medieval paintings. The circular vault is a true jewel and it was painted in the 13th century, while the rest of the paintings date of the 14th century. Unfortunately, I haven't got a photo of the whole vault, but only of parts of it. The fourth and fifth pictures portrays two wall paintings. The representation of Virgin Maria covering the believers was common in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Also famous Italian painter Piero della Francesca (1420-92) painted a similar one as a part of his Polittico della Misericordia. Actually, as soon as I saw this one, I thought of the Tuscanian painter. Leave a Comment

Milan-PARMA 03/04 by Calcio Parma’s supporters aren’t among the most famous in Italy. The curva parmagiani is quite small, and they don’t go many at the awaygames. Still, the atmosphere at Stadio Tardini is quite good, and the biggest group in the curva, Boys, are very loyal. Boys was built 1977, and is represented at all Parma-games, both home and away. The homesupporters are standing in the curva Nord. While the awaysupporters stands in a sector at the other side, Curva Sud. Leave a Comment

The Battistero (baptistry) is located next to the Duomo. It provides a great example of transition from Romanesque to Gothic. It was planned by Benedetto Antelami (the author of the Deposition in the cathedral) and firstly built in rose marble between 1196 and 1216. It was achieved at the end of the 13th - beginning of the 14th century. The building has an octagonal plan, but doesn't look heavy thanks to the several loggias. There are also some false portals. Moreover, you can see beautiful decorations with religious references. The recent restorations even revealed traces of colour. You can also see a row of panels portraying animals, situated at the bottom of the building. Unfortunately, you cannot distinguish it very well from my pictures. The baptistry has three portals. You can read more about them in the next tip. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza del Duomo
