Just behind our watermill, is a rather large, very steep hill, and at the top of it - just peeking through the tops of the trees - we could spy the ruins of an old castle tower. Mum and I decided we would go walk-about one afternoon and see if there was any way we could access it.
Up one of the side roads, we spotted a steep bank that looked as though it would lead us in the right direction. We donned our David Livingston hats and decided to explore! After a very perilous climb through bush and various hedges, we came to the top and discovered the remains of a ruined tower. It was plain to see that there had been visitors in the not too distant past, as we found some beer cans and bottles of wine, littered amongst the stones...obviously a rendezvouz point for some amorous teens. Personally I would think clambering up the side of the mountain after dark slightly hairy, but each to their own.
We had a jolly good snoop around imagining all the people who had lived there in the past, and trying to guess its history. (Since then I have not been able to find out anything about it all - any trivia would be welcome!) We decided to descend down the other side of the hill which brought us all the way down to the far side of our watermill. A short hop across the small stream and we were home, flushed with excitement at our escapade and ready for a warming glass of cherry liqueur!

One afternoon, after a particularly enormous lunch, we decided to explore the village in which our watermill was situated...We wandered through the small village of Verrucola, checking out the tumbledown walls, the nooks and crannies, the old stone houses...It all looked like something out of a fairy tale. The town is delightful in its appearance - there are small roads leading up and down, around and about, you can spend a good few hours just exploring: what a feast for the eyes.
