Favorite thing: The beaches of Grado are on the Adriatic side of the island, facing the sea with views up to the head of the Adriatic and across to the mountains of Slovenia and Croatia. There are a couple of beaches in Grado: the main beach is wide and sandy (with some grit and shells) and stretches along the length of the modern holiday town, backed by pine trees and hotels. There is also a smaller beach, the Spiaggia Costa Azzurra, on the other side of the historic centre.
Favorite thing: We were taken to Grado from Trieste by bus. It was a long causeway crossing the lagoon from the mainland: It was very similar to arriving in Venice, but with a much emptier landscape. The Grado lagoon is dotted with small islands including the church-island of Barbana. Ahead lies Grado, a long thin island dividing the lagoon from the Adriatic sea. The historic part of town, with its picturesque harbour and alleys, is on the right as you approach.
Favorite thing: The small wooden boats like this serve for angle fisihing in the skin-deep water or taking out the squids. It is the best way for fishing the highest quality fish which can be found in the Adriatic.
Favorite thing: This are classical Mediterranean fishermen's boats serving for entraping fish by the nets. The boat like this is equiped by very sophisticated radar system which locate the swarm and its position, enabling profitable fishing.
Not all the fishermens boats serve for fishing, this one is very characteristic and serve excluselvely for taking out the shells from the bottom of the sea.
This kind of boat is forbidden in my country Croatia because, when taking out the shells it, contemporarly, grate whole the bottom devastating sea-flora for decades.
Favorite thing: Grado is the most important Italian fishery center in the Northern Adriatic. Its fishermen supply great number of fresh fish-markets in the Veneto Region. Everywhere the place you can see a number of fishermen's boats, equipmet or smell of the fish. The local fishermen are widely known for their skill in fishing.
