Miscellaneous: At our hotel we picked up a free tourist map and guide of Trieste. It was published by the Tourist Office of Friaul Venezia Giulia and was also available from the local Tourist Office in Trieste.
It turned out to be an excellent and very helpful map during our 5 days in Trieste: Besides a large map of the centre of Trieste it also included descriptions of the main sights as well as recommendations how to get there by bus.
Trieste's Tourist Office can be found at the small alleyway Via dell'Orologio 1; just off the square Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Beware of the Bora! The winds that sweep through here can literally knock you over. I have no balance problems whatsoever, yet I almost fell to the ground a few times because of the gusts. It is imperative in the cold weather days of the fall and winter, that you have a warm jacket, preferably one that is impervious to wind.
Photo Equipment: With as beautiful as Trieste is, bring enough film!

Luggage and bags: If you need to bring a lot of luggage, therefore you are considering using buses to reach your accomodation, be aware that some buses (especially lines 24 and 30) are very small, while the buses running on the main lines (numbers 1, 17, 17/ and others) are always overcrowded and you may have problems to get off the bus. So, if you are not travelling alone, you'd better bring two or more small cases instead of a big one.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: It is impossible to give general advice on clothes in Trieste, since the weather can rapidly change. Before getting there, you should have a look at the forecast to be sure you won't find bora. When it isn't windy, it can be quite hot, not only in summer but also in spring.
From my personal experience, I warmly suggest you should not bring a portable umbrella in case of rain, because it rarely rains without wind and bora destroyed at least two of my little umbrellas. So, you can either bring a big umbrella or walk under the rain (I did that some times from the railway station to my apartment, which is two kms far).
That said, you'd better put both warm and light clothes into your suitcase if you visit Trieste in spring or in autumn. Wear comfortable shoes because the best means of transport to visit the city centre will be your feet.
Photo Equipment: Bring a good camera with many film rolls or with a good memory in case you have a digital one. You will find much more to photograph than you think.
Miscellaneous: If you visit Trieste on a winter week-end, bring something to eat from home, since you will hardly find an open restaurant in the centre or along the sea.

Wedged between the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the Alps to the north, the triestine Riviera has a Mediterranean temperate, maritime climate.
Snow and frost are uncommon.
Temperatures in late Spring are on average mild enough to enable comfortable swimming from early May.
You can expect average temperatures in autumn be slightly higher so that swimming in the Mediterranean can be enjoyed until mid October.
The Mediterranean climate physically manifests itself through the presence of olive trees for they only grow in areas with hot summers and mild winters. . You may even find one in your garden.

French novelist
Marie-Henry Beyle was born in Grenoble to prosperous, middle-class parents. He studied at Paris and then entered the army. He was appointed to a minor civil service role in Napoleon's administration, going to Russia in 1812 with the invasion force, returning as one of the few survivors. In 1814 he went to Italy where he served as French consul at Trieste. Here he began to write on music and painting, publishing 'The lives of Haydn and Mozart' (1818) and 'The History of Painting in Italy' (1817), under the nom de plume Stendhal. In 1821, he was forced to leave Trieste for political reasons.
